Research Associate 1 (Transportation GIS Specialist), AAUP


The Connecticut Transportation Safety Research Center (CTSRC) at the University of Connecticut operates within the School of Engineering. CTSRC is looking for two Research Associates to assist in the development of enterprise software for transportation systems in the state of Connecticut. These positions will work closely with the Connecticut Department of Transportation to develop applications to query, visualize and analyze transportation related crashes or assets.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Confers with program director and project manager to resolve questions of program and project intent; output requirements; input data acquisition; extent of automatic programming and coding use and modification; and, inclusion of internal checks and controls.
  2. Contribute as a productive member of an agile development team.
  3. Analyze, design and implement business requirements.
  4. Design and implementation of data models.
  5. Integrating and testing with back end services and databases.
  6. Development and testing of software APIs.
  7. Development and testing of user interfaces.
  8. Profiling and optimizing system performance.
  9. Document all programming tasks and procedures.
  10. Perform routine software maintenance.
  11. Develop web applications based on users' needs.
  12. Write effective and well documented code.
  13. Maintain and support application as requirement evolves.
  14. Work with other developers, database admins, and project managers in a fast moving development environment.
  15. Transform user requirements into highly functional user interfaces.
  16. Understand and implement security and data protection.
  17. Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. PhD in Computer programming, Transportation or GIS related field.
  2. Evidence of ability to independently analyze and translate assigned programs into operating programs and prepare detailed program documentation.
  3. Demonstrated ability in analytical reasoning and logical problem solving.
  4. Experience with at least one of the following: JavaScript, JavaScript Frameworks (e.g., Angular, React, Vue), Python, .NET Framework, .NET core, ASP.NET MVC, C#, or Java.
  5. Good written and oral communication skills.
  6. Self-motivated and eager to learn new programming skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. PhD degree with at least 3 years of experience
  2. Two or more years' experience working in a team of developers to build an enterprise application.
  3. Advanced knowledge in one or more of, ArcGIS and ArcGIS Server applications, SQL and SQL server, Java and Python, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, Angular, .NET Framework, ASP.NET MVC, or C#.
  4. Experience with Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) integration and development.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

These are full-time, 11-month positions based on available funding and subject to annual renewal. Salary will be commensurate with successful candidate's background and experience.
