About the Position:

The VCCS Internal Communications Manager is responsible for managing the internal (employee- and organization-focused) communications between the VCCS System Office, Virginia's 23 community colleges, and the VCCS Shared Services Center and supporting the traditional media relations activities for the VCCS at the direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications.

Duties for this position include:

  • Manages and executes communications activities around significant VCCS decisions and announcements including organizational structure, new appointments, programs, awards, employee recognition and other high-profile events.
  • Leverages internal communications to convey messages to inform, align and engage employees.
  • Maintains strong relationships with senior leaders to support effective executive communications, ensuring that key messages are delivered.
  • Supports the development and implementation of communications strategy, analyzes effectiveness of communications efforts, improves existing processes and researches new communication approaches.
  • Uses expertise in internal relationship management to advise and influence those who wish to communicate, and provides coaching to management on effective communication to employees.
  • Incorporates new technology and techniques to communicate effectively within the institution.
  • Demonstrates strong skills in organizational communications to shape messages, create communication channels, develop strategic communication plans and provide insights and information at both the strategic and tactical levels.

 

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with major studies in journalism, communications, public relations or a related field, or combination of education and experience that allows incumbent to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Considerable experience is required in leading an internal communication programs and as a communications supervisor/generalist developing strategic internal and external communications plans, writing and designing promotional copy and successfully managing complex communications campaigns.
  • Experience establishing dynamic and positive working relationships with a broad base of audiences to include college leadership, faculty, and staff.
  • Experience as a journalist and/or public relations practitioner; supervising staff, defining problems and applying solutions to complex issues.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and practical experience in the practice of public relations, marketing and communications.
  • Strong writing ability and communications skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with social media channels and tools, demonstrated project management and supervisory experience, and the ability to work individually and as part of a team serving multiple clients.
