Job Description:

This position will teach Psychology courses such as Abnormal Psychology, Child Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Principles of Psychology at 18-21 credit hours per semester, which may include classes at the Hampton or Historic Triangle campuses and/or off-site locations; on-campus and online classes; day, evening, and/or weekend classes.

Essential Functions:

  • Designs, develops and assesses curriculum.
  • Remains current in the academic discipline and in trends in teaching through professional development, further education, and/or scholarship.
  • Participates in activities that directly support student success, such as mentoring and tutoring.
  • Works effectively and collaboratively in a diverse educational environment.
  • Contributes high levels of energy, engagement, creativity and leadership to the teaching and learning environment.
  • Facilitates student learning through in-class and out-of-class activities.
  • Participates in meetings and events required by the college, division, and program administrators.
  • Collaborates in a diverse and collegial organizational culture with high standards for performance.
  • Responds in a timely fashion to information requests from college, division, and program administrators.
  • Participates in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the college and its constituents.
  • Performs professional responsibilities in accordance with pertinent goals, missions, and plans of the college, division, and programs.

Note: This position does NOT have the expectation of serving on college governance committees or providing academic advising.

This is a restricted, temporary one-year appointment.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Psychology from a regionally accredited institution including a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in psychology that represent the breadth and depth of the entire field of psychology beyond the applied areas of counseling, clinical, industrial/organizational, or educational psychology. Coursework in subject areas such as the biological basis of behavior, learning, cognition, motivation, emotion, memory, development, and research methods is required. Degrees or coursework which do not have a psychology title or prefix will not be considered.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff and administrators as an individual or as a part of a team.
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence at the college or university level.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience in using instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g. Blackboard) with ability to use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience.
  • Have a clear understanding of and commitment to serving the needs of traditional and non-traditional students from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to measure, assess and align student outcomes within courses or programs.
  • Ability to modify when appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.
  • Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize documented student learning.
  • Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward student learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grade rosters to division administrator each semester according to established deadlines.

Ability to work at all campus locations.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in curriculum development.
  • Community college teaching experience.
  • Education or training in the area of distance learning.

Experience teaching distance learning courses.

 

Special Requirements:

Hours of duty: Will vary, some evenings and weekends may be required.
