Research Assistant Professor

Position Summary:
Applications are invited for a Research Assistant Professor position (non-tenure track) with the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech. The position involves conducting research in communication systems, with particular focus on the applications of machine learning techniques to communications. Research is intended to contribute to multiple externally sponsored projects in communications and networking.
The successful candidate will join Wireless @ Virginia Tech (Wireless@VT, https://wireless.vt.edu), an interdisciplinary research team consisting of faculty and students in electrical and computer engineering, computer science, and mechanical engineering. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage with the Center's industrial partners, as well as faculty from partner universities. Wireless@VT is a world leader in wireless research and education with a broad spectrum of research encompassing wireless communications and networking, including RF circuits, information assurance, signal processing and algorithm development, networking, antennas and propagation, communications theory, and modem hardware design. The center is especially known for its work in cognitive radio and advanced spectrum access technologies, and has a research program in wireless communications that dates back to the 1960's.
The main responsibilities include:
- Conducting independent research in communications and networking.
- Writing top-quality papers for journals, conferences, and workshops.
- Developing research proposals for obtaining externally sponsored research.
- Recruiting and advising PhD and MS students on their dissertations and theses.
- Serving on PhD and MS student dissertation and thesis committees.
- Presenting research outcomes in conferences, workshops, and other such meetings.

Required Qualifications:
- A Ph.D in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related field, with emphasis on communications/networking and/or machine learning earned prior to employment.
- Research expertise in machine learning techniques and their applications to communications and networking.
- Effective communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to articulate a coherent agenda of collaborative research or scholarship and to identify potential funding sources to support such research.
- Formal training in both communications and machine learning is highly desirable.
