Position Summary:
The Physics Department at Virginia Tech invites applications for a postdoctoral or research associate position (commensurate with experience) in experimental biophysics, with focus on nanoscale structure and dynamics in biomimetic lipid membranes. The research involves design, synthesis, and characterization of biomembranes. Candidates should have one or more of the following skills: expertise in lipid membrane characterization (e.g., DSC , AFM , spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy), membrane deposition techniques (e.g. Langmuir-Blodgett transfer, flow coating), and/or protein purification and characterization. Additional expertise in x-ray or neutron scattering techniques is desirable, but not a prerequisite. Other requirements include the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, strong verbal and written communication skills in English, strong motivation and a high degree of independence. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in physics, physical chemistry, biophysics or a closely related field.
This research will be conducted with Prof. Rana Ashkar and her students at Virginia Tech, in collaboration with John Katsaras' group at Oak Ridge National Lab. The work will require close collaboration and interaction with students, postdocs, and faculty members in the Center for Soft Matter and Biophysics at VT, as well as instrument scientists at national scattering facilities ( SNS , NCNR , BNL ).
At the research associate level, this position will also entail collaboration with, as well as mentoring and supervision of junior researchers.
Rank of position will be determined by qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:
• A Ph.D. in physics, physical chemistry, biophysics or a closely related field
• All degree requirements must be complete before the appointment can begin, and applications should be within five years of receiving doctorate degree
• Extensive experience in synthesis and characterization of biomimetic membranes
• Proven skills in data modeling and analysis (e.g. Matlab/Mathematica)
• Demonstrated ability to communicate research results in peer-reviewed publications
• To be considered for the research associate position, prior postdoctoral research experience is required

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in x-ray or neutron scattering experimentation and analysis
• Experience in lipid membrane design and characterization
• Experience in fluorescence microscopy/spectroscopy
• For research associate position, some experience supervising junior researchers is preferred
