Department Head, Associate of Science in Nursing

Job Summary/Basic Function:

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for directing the operations of the School of Nursing & Health Sciences’ Associate of Science in Nursing program.

MAJOR DUTIES

• Assists the Dean in the development and maintenance of curriculum and courses representative of the ASN program and supportive of the educational objectives of the college.
• Assists the Dean in evaluating, recruiting and recommending the appointment of faculty.
• Monitors student success, including student retention and progression data.
• Develops semester course schedules and reviews clinical/laboratory schedules.
• Assists in the development of the department budget recommendation; supplies data and statistics; administers assigned budgets.
• Recommends faculty for tenure and promotion as appropriate.
• Assists Dean in producing a variety of reports.
• Reviews problems between faculty members or between faculty and students.
• Teaches courses using face-to-face learning format – 6 hours Fall, 6 hours Spring, 3 hours Summer/week
• Participates in the recruitment and advising of students.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Academic Dean assigns work in terms of department goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of department activities.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include college policies and procedures; University System of Georgia policies and procedures; SACSOC, Board of Nursing, and ACEN standards and requirements; faculty, staff and student handbooks; and relevant state and federal regulations. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

Minimum Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a doctoral degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
• Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the ASN program in order to direct and coordinate work within the department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience within the department.
• Current RN licensure in Georgia.
• Knowledgeable about ACEN standards applicable to the ASN department.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

• Knowledge of the field of nursing.
• Knowledge of accreditation requirements from SACS, Board of Nursing, and ACEN.
• Knowledge of assessment and strategic planning strategies for the School and College.
• Knowledge of budget development and management principles.
• Knowledge of classroom practices, teaching methodologies, assessment systems, and educational technology.
• Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority.
• Skill in making timely decisions.
• Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs.
• Skill in decision making and problem solving.
• Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
