HPC Systems Specialist

Position Summary:
Provide systems administration for Virginia Tech research infrastructure. Provide support to research computing resources, supporting services and applications. Responsibilities include developing or enhancing processes and procedures to assist in systems administration, operation and performance monitoring. Work closely with HPC team at Advanced Research Computing to define and implement best practices for advanced user support and research collaboration projects.

Required Qualifications:
-Working knowledge of UNIX /Linux systems, system administration tools, methodologies, and security practices.
-Demonstrated competency in the design, build, and configuration of services necessary for IT infrastructure.
-Experience with network configuration and management.
-Experience in troubleshooting software and hardware system errors
-The ability to analyze a wide range of system related problems.
-Strong interpersonal and communications skills
-Proven ability to work in groups and lead projects.
-Experience with at least one major Linux distribution.
-B.S. in the STEM field or equivalent related work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience with computing clusters and supporting applications.
-Preference given for experience with PBS , Moab, or Slurm.
-Preference given for experience with installation, operation and tuning of high speed fabrics.
-Preference will be given for experience with parallel file systems including GPFS and Lustre.
-Preference will be given for experience with cloud computing, including installation, operation, and management.
