General Position Description:
The Director of Communications is a strategic thinker with excellent customer service and management skills. The role is primarily responsible for gaining positive media exposure for the College at local, regional and national levels. He/ she serves as the designated spokesperson for the College and as liaison to print and broadcast media. This role plans and conducts a communications public relations strategy designed to create and maintain a favorable public image of the College across a wide range of audiences. The incumbent plans and directs development and communication of information designed to keep the public informed of the College's programs, accomplishments, and mission. He/she is a key advisor and is a member of the College crisis communication team. The employee arranges public relations initiatives/ campaigns in order to meet needs, objectives, and policies of the college aligned with strategic goals and objectives.
Responsibilities/Duties
Essential Job Functions:
Management Practices
- Supervise, motivate and manage small team of employees, students and volunteers.
- Develop and lead implementation of the College's Communications Plan.
- Develop, execute and managing traditional and social communications strategies and outreach materials, including press conferences, one-on-one meetings with the media and opinion leaders (i.e. elected officials, appointed officials, etc.), news releases, editorial board meetings, placing and writing and/or editing opinion editorials.
- Cultivate, maintain, enhance and track positive working relationships with targeted online, print and broadcast journalists, editorial writers, columnists and other opinion leaders.
- Ensure the College protects and promotes its image in a proper, coordinated and consistent manner.
- Manage the narrative, news about the College to the community.
- Gather and disseminate timely information to press, external stakeholders and BCCC staff.
- Detect public relations issues as they emerge and address them directly and in a timely manner.
- Serve as designated College spokesperson and as lead on crisis communications.
- Monitor the management of relationships with external agencies including PR, event planning, writers to ensure quality of service and value-for-money.
- Support, maintain and develop key relationships with external groups, partner organizations, individual influencers, local communities and other stakeholders.
General Community, Media Relations
- Develop and implement comprehensive media strategy to maximize free positive media exposure for College programs, faculty, students and achievements.
- Work with the publications office personnel to coordinate production of print, radio and television advertisements, and on-air promotions
- Disseminate facts and information about the College's activities to the public; serves as designated media spokesperson
- Provide all media (print, cable TV, radio, social media, web sites, etc.) with notices of upcoming events, programs, and advertising
- Provide communication updates and gather input to improve, evaluate, and enhance processes and communications
- Direct public relations events, media briefings and external marketing events
- Work with monitoring service to share daily related news clippings with Senior Management team.
Public Relations and Internal Communications
- Working closely with Vice President and College employees to identify key stakeholders among community, business, faith-based, legislative and other key groups for targeted outreach efforts.
- Identify community needs that coincide strategically with College mission and initiatives to promote synergy of joint outreach activities.
- Identify external community events and campaigns in which to establish a College presence.
- Maintain ongoing relationship with public relations counterparts at other Maryland community colleges (including MACC and MCCPRO) and support joint efforts such as the Student Advocacy Day and Big Give activities.
- Pursue institutional and individual award recognition opportunities for the College, faculty, staff and students.
- Provide (or supervise staff that provide) written text as requested for college publications including employee newsletters, fact sheets, PSA copy, internal/external calendar items and awards application packets.
- Proofread and edit text as needed for College and Foundation publications.
- Write and edit speeches for President.
- Direct the Implementation of a Speakers Bureau that will position College faculty and staff as experts in a range of subject areas; enhance credibility and authority of College personnel, and expand the visibility of the College.
- Direct the development of and actively maintain multiple database of contact information for all targeted constituencies.
Required Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- A Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in marketing, public relations, journalism, English, communications, multimedia or related field.
- Five to seven years of experience in communications, public or community relations.

- Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution in marketing, public relations, journalism, English, communications, multimedia or related field.
- Management or supervisory experienced desired.
