Reporting Relationships

Reports to: Supervision is received from the Manager, Programming Support Group.
Supervision Exercised: Supervision may be exercised over student workers and interns.

Job Summary
To consult, evaluate, recommend, design, install, code, configure, test, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of software, including systems software, applications packages, and databases.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Related duties may be assigned.

  1. Identify and analyze user and system requirements and constraints.
  2. Evaluate a variety of software solutions.
  3. Design, code, install, and configure complex software packages and systems to address user and system needs.
  4. Test, troubleshoot, and repair complex software.
  5. Maintain, revise, and modify complex software.
  6. Install software revisions, updates and patches.
  7. Serve as the primary or secondary programming support for one or more of these technologies systems:
    1. Ellucian Colleague (ERP)
    2. Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
    3. MS Access
    4. Web application development
    5. SQL DB
  8. Possess an understanding of application development processes.
  9. Develop current, innovative, reusable applications.
  10. Keep well informed on rapid development tools.
  11. Prepare and maintain software and system documentation.
  12. Train and assist users with the operation of software systems.
  13. Maintain regular and effective communication with the user community, colleagues within the organization unit, and supervisors.
  14. Respond to service requests in a timely, effective, and respectful manner.
  15. Maintain continuous professional growth and development through a series of actions, including reading technical, professional, and marketing literature, attending workshops, seminars and demonstrations, collaborating with vendors, manufacturers, and colleagues, and engaging in hands-on experiences with a variety of technologies.
  16. Provide informed recommendations for enhancements and improvements at Rock Valley College based on new and emerging technologies.
  17. Participate in strategic planning and budgetary decisions.
  18. Supervise student workers and interns as assigned.
  19. Regular attendance is expected.
  20. Using tact and courtesy, the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with persons contacted in the course of work.

Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s degree in an area closely related to computing or 5 years of recent experience in enterprise level or large scale complex database programming environment required. Excellent analytical and reasoning skills. Ability to prioritize effectively and to work efficiently without direct supervision. Ability to communicate effectively. Related professional certifications are desirable. Experience working in an educational setting is preferred but not required.
 
Successful applicants will have experience in some or all of the technologies below with a specific emphasis on MS Access/SQL, Visual Basic, C#, any 4GL, web skills, Cold Fusion, Common Spot, Any CRM, Unix
 
Enterprise Resource Management (ERP):  Experience with Enterprise Resource Management (ERP) systems programming. Administrative and Student Information Systems (i.e. Ellucian [Colleague, Banner], CAMS, PeopleSoft, Jenzabar) for higher education preferred but not required.
 
Programming and Support: MS Access, SQL, SSL, any 4GL, Visual Basic, Content Management System (e.g. CommonSpot), ColdFusion, Web-based tools such as HTML, JavaScript, CSS, ASP.NET, C#, etc.
