Assistant Director, University Freshman Center

Assistant Director, University Freshman Center

Reporting to the Associate Provost for Student Success and Director of the University Freshman Center, this individual will serve in a mid-level leadership position that provides support and assistance to first-year students and will serve as coordinator of a mentoring program called Student and Faculty Engagement (aka "SAFE").

The primary responsibilities focus on the delivery of a developmental advisement approach, as well as, the coordination of activities and events that assist first-year students in their transition, acclimation and integration into the University community.

Specific responsibilities related to advisement include:


  • To serve as a general and academic advisor to first-year students from the point of their admission to the culmination of their first-year on campus.
  • To assist in achieving the University's retention goal by providing assisting to first-year students with their academic, personal and financial concerns.
  • To assist first-year students in the registration process by teaching them to use the existing University technology.
  • To compile information and analyze data in an effort to identify patterns of attrition among first-year students.
  • To develop innovative and creative techniques to contact and motivate first-year students to visit the Center and make total use of their advisor.
  • To coordinate events and activities for selected populations of first-year students in an effort to promote academic success and connect students to the institution.
  • To deliver presentations regarding the University Freshman Center at New Student Orientation and events held for parents during the year.
  • To serve as a liaison to the academic units, and administrative offices that serve first-year students.



Specific responsibilities related to the mentoring program include:

  • Work with faculty moderator of the SAFE program to:
    • Recruit campus community members (faculty, administrators, staff and students) to participate as mentors in SAFE (for freshmen) and Sophomore SAFE (for sophomore students).
    • Recruit incoming and continuing students to participate as mentees in the SAFE Program.
    • Launch participation letters and monitor submitted mentor communication reports.
  • Participate in summer training program and other informative presentations explaining SAFE.
  • Participate in Freshman Move-In Day.
  • Participate in SAFE staff meetings.
  • Participate in mid-academic year check-in with students.
  • Plan, organize and participate in SAFE related events (minimum of four events per academic year).
  • Supervise the Graduate Assistant.
  • Serve as the liaison between mentors, students, and the University Freshman Center.
  • Assist SAFE participants (mentors and mentees) by answering questions regarding university processes and procedures. Referrals to an advisor are made as needed.
  • Follow-up with at-risk students.
  • Participate in gathering data and creating reports for the UFC management team.



To plan, coordinate and execute other events and programs as assigned by the Associate Provost and/or the faculty moderator of the SAFE program as needed.





Job Qualifications:


  • Master's degree preferred; Bachelor's degree required.
  • 3-5 years full-time work experience preferably in higher education.
  • Previous experience with mentoring programs is preferred.
  • Willingness and desire to serve students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills a must.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must have experience with computer technology.
  • Evening and weekend work required.
