Assistant Professor in Residence


The Africana Studies Institute, in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Connecticut, is seeking an assistant professor in residence for the fall 2018-spring 2019 academic term, expected to begin August 23rd, 2018. The successful candidate will be expected to teach the following courses: two African American history survey courses to 1865 and since 1865; and upper level courses on the social and cultural history of the African diaspora. In addition, if appropriate to the curricular needs of the Institute, teaching syllabi that reflect the broad research areas of the instructor would be welcome.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in African American history (or foreign equivalent) by start date; teaching experience in African diaspora and African American history; demonstrated excellence in teaching; excellent written and oral communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Proven experience serving as sole instructor for survey courses in African diaspora history; experience teaching social and/or cultural history or the history of popular culture. S/he will share a commitment to effective instruction and mentoring of students, to the development of innovative courses, and to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience. APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full time, 9-month, non-tenure-track position, which is renewable for up to three years. The successful candidate will receive a competitive annual salary and fringe benefits. Technological support and office space will also be provided by the Africana Studies Institute. Teaching load is three courses each fall semester and four courses per spring semester. The successful candidate will participate in the academic life of the Institute and his or her primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus with the possibility of teaching at one of UConn's regional campuses or in on-line instruction.
