Associate Director of Secondary STEM Teacher Education

DEADLINE: Open until Filled

The Center for Secondary Teacher Education is a University initiative housed in the College of Arts and Sciences in collaboration with the State of Delaware and other secondary education programs across the university. The Associate Director of Secondary STEM Teacher Education has primary responsibility for overseeing the creation of, recruitment into, and growth of new pathways to certification of students majoring in the STEM disciplines. The Associate Director works directly with students, faculty, and staff, to provide a maximal number of STEM undergraduates the opportunity to earn secondary teaching credentials in physics, chemistry, biology, or mathematics, while simultaneously completing a STEM degree program.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Recruits, mentors, and advises students through pathways to certification as a secondary physics, chemistry, biology, or mathematics teacher.
  • Collaborates with leadership, faculty, students, and staff in the College of Arts & Sciences, the Center for Secondary Teacher Education, and STEM departments across campus to create opportunities for shared decision making about STEM teacher education.
  • Refines and implements a comprehensive strategic plan for the program with benchmarks and assessments.
  • Develops knowledge of programs nationwide to determine best practices and proactively address potential challenges.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to the program and its potential along with a solution oriented focus in meetings, presentations, and communications.
  • Cognizant of current and emerging research and education policies related to STEM education and teacher certification.
  • Establishes, maintains, and evaluates partnerships with schools and districts to strengthen recruitment pathways for secondary STEM education students.
  • Recruits and leads an advisory committee comprised of UD faculty, UD staff from related programs/departments, etc. focused on providing guidance during the start-up and subsequent program years.
  • Develop and maintains a digital identity and website to effectively market and sustain the program.
  • Manages annual budget in accordance with grant and UD requirements/guidelines/procedures while also seeking additional funding opportunities to support the goals of the program.
  • Create and implement recruitment and general program events within the annual calendar.
  • Develops and manages retention strategies
  • Coordinates with STEM teacher education faculty re advising students enrolled in program
  • Formulates program's policies, establishes evaluation and documentation procedures.
  • Meets all reporting deadlines required by the grant and other program responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree, Ph.D. or Ed.D. preferred. Experience teaching at the secondary level in a STEM discipline is desirable.
  • Familiarity with academic disciplines in STEM as taught in the University and curricular issues, standards, and subjects as taught in the public schools, as well as a knowledge of public education and education reform movements in Delaware and more generally in the United States.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals, as well as proven skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Possesses an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Must be able to work in a collegial, effective way with individuals of varied backgrounds.
  • Skills in grant writing and reporting.
  • Skills in writing various types of documents for diverse audiences.
  • Skill in group dynamics, consensus building, and conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of various methodologies for evaluating and documenting the results of education programs; familiarity with principles of budgeting, financial management, and cost accounting for federal and non-federal gifts and grants; administrative, organization, and management skills; knowledge of computer applications; effective communication skills in a diverse environment
