Environmental Services Manager



The Environmental Services Manager performs responsible managerial work involving the assignment and direct supervision of environmental services employees. Ensures assigned staff maintains proper cleanliness and sanitation of buildings, offices, classrooms, fitness centers, laboratories, furnishings and equipment as well as building entrances and exterior walkways.
The Environmental Services Manager is also responsible for training new employees on proper custodial procedures for the use of manually operated tools, electrically-powered machines, cleaning compounds, solvents and chemicals.
Responsibilities/Duties
  • Supervises the activities of Environmental Services Supervisor, Technicians and, temporary employees or student workers directly by using both verbal and written instructions in compliance with the guidelines provided by the immediate supervisor and using independent judgment in instances not covered by the guidelines;
  • Provides reports to Director of Facilities or work order initiator in a clear and professional presentation;
  • Ensures that environmental services meet the needs of the department, the College, and established environmental guidelines by scheduling work activities and adjusting workloads to compensate for scheduled and unscheduled absences, changing priorities, and special custodial projects;
  • Inspects the work of environmental personnel and ensures corrective measures are be taken when necessary to meet guidelines;
  • Develops an effective team of environmental personnel by instructing all employees in the proper methods and use of materials and equipment for safe and efficient work performance,
  • Evaluates individual performances to meet established standards, provides feedback on performance evaluations and recommends retention of new employees;
  • Assists in hiring qualified employees by participating in the interview process and recommends selected candidates;
  • Enforces Colleges rules and policies regarding employee conduct, uses progressive discipline when necessary.

Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in business administration, hotel management or related field; OR years of experience in lieu of degree
  • Experience working in a union environment;
  • Minimum of (3) three years of management experience and/or previous supervisory experience;
  • (3) Three years of relevant experience working in facilities, custodial, janitorial experience, for a large organization with multiple facilities;
  • Minimum of (6) six years progressively responsible job-related experience in addition to a high school diploma or GED may be substituted for required education.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated excellent attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Significant knowledge of custodial equipment and standards, including modem safety standards and techniques;
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently handle multiple, simultaneous, and complex tasks and projects;
  • Analyses and resolves work problems; initiated or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve goals;
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities;
  • Must be available to respond to campus when needed and be on - call as assigned;
  • Proficient in estimating labor and material costs.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
  • (5) Five years' relevant experience working in facilities, custodial, janitorial experience, for a large organization with multiple facilities preferred;
  • Experience in an institution of Higher Education.
