Academic Advisor

Position Summary:
Applications are invited for the position of Academic Advisor in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. The key responsibilities for this position include one-on-one and group advising; consistent and accurate communications with students; and confidential, consistent and accurate maintenance of student records. The primary emphasis is on advising computer science majors, minors, and other students interested in computer science, including course selection and registration advising, creating plans of study, monitoring progress to graduation and performing graduation clearances, explaining college and university policies and procedures, communicating to students electronically, and working with students not making satisfactory academic progress to address deficiencies and create remediation plans. In addition, the successful candidate will perform data-driven tracking of student progress, participate in innovative student success initiatives integrating technology and streamlining advising workflows, and provide feedback to department leadership. In addition to the core student advising role, this position also serves as departmental liaison to Career and Professional Development and participates in departmental outreach activities such as information sessions for prospective students, recruiting activities of the college and university, and marketing the undergraduate program through mailings, web postings, and related activities.

Required Qualifications:
-Master's degree in a relevant field from an accredited college or university or bachelor's degree with significant experience;
-Previous experience in academic or career advising with a diverse student undergraduate and/or graduate population in a college or university setting;
-Advanced computer skills, particularly related to data management software;
-Strong computer skills in electronic file management, word processing, and spreadsheets;
-Experience with software such as MS Office;
-Must be detail oriented, with evidence of strong organizational and problem solving skills;
-Must be self-motivated as well as flexible and creative in finding solutions for problems;
-Must enjoy working with students and have a professional manner of communication;
-Must be able to work effectively with a diverse population, including students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and prospective students and their families.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Master's degree in a relevant field from an accredited college or university;
-Basic working knowledge of Computer Science, Engineering, Science or Math;
-Classroom instructional experience and/or counseling or advising in a university setting;
-Knowledge of university policies and procedures, particularly related to registration, class scheduling, degree and graduation requirements; experience with large relational databases such as Banner.
