Graduate Assistant - Assistant Area Coordinator

The Graduate Assistant - Assistant Area Coordinator ( AAC ) is a part-time live-in position that is responsible for assisting in the overall administration of a cluster of residence halls housing about 400 students in total. The AAC is required to hold at least 10 office hours per week Monday - Friday (preferably 2 hours daily), and devote 5 hours a week to additional programming, staff meetings, 1:1 meetings, trainings, in-services, inspections, crisis response, etc.

The AAC supervises undergraduate student Resident Advisors (RA) to create safe, caring and inclusive communities through community development, student development, leadership development, and administration and departmental responsibilities.

The AAC will be hired for a period of one academic year, with renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and evaluation. Because of the complexities and demands placed on the AAC position, it is expected that AAC will view the position as a primary internship. This position has been designed for graduate students that will be enrolled in a program during the academic year of hire. Compensation includes a stipend, on-campus apartment and meal plan.

Responsibilities of the AAC include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Is visible and available to the residents of the quad by holding regular office hours, attending events and programs, being present and visible within the residence hall community, and attending/facilitating community initiatives.
• The AAC will be provided an on-campus apartment and consequently it is expected that they are generally present and available to residents.
• Responds to student and community issues and concerns including, but not limited to, roommate conflicts, community conflicts, student and community behavior, facilities concerns and conduct violations.
• Provides supervision for 9 Resident Assistants (RA) and 2 Lead Resident Advisors ( LRAS ) including, but not limited to, training, staff meetings, and one on one facilitation, evaluations, recognition, programming, quad budgeting, and discipline.
• Upholds and enforces the Code of Student Conduct and Residential Life Community Standards; supervises staff in the enforcement of policy.
• Holds regular office hours that are posted and communicated with supervisor, RA staff, and residents.
• Participates in hall opening and closing processes.
• Participate in interview day and group process day.
• Participates in all required professional staff training and development.
• Position is identified as a Title IX Responsible Employee and a Clery Campus Security Authority, and is expected to respond and report accordingly.
• Understands, is committed to, and implements affirmative action and nondiscrimination regulations, policies and principles.
• Performs other related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled in a master's degree program in college student personnel administration, higher education administration, or related area.
• The term of employment is expected to be August 1st through May 31st. We anticipate typical weeks will average 15 hours per week, but the schedule may fluctuate depending on specific responsibilities in a given week. The exception is during August and January training periods when hours will likely reach 30 hours per week.
• Evidence of strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interact with a diverse population of students.
• Mature communication skills and evidence of ability to work effectively with students, parents and colleagues.
• Ability to work independently and with good judgment in complex situations.
• Experience working with diverse populations and a demonstrated understanding of the issues faced by students who are members of underrepresented groups.
• Demonstrated experience and skills related to program development, student development and working with groups.
• Familiarity with residence hall systems and/or other education, administration or management experience.
• Experience working as part of group and proven to be a "team player."

Preferred Qualifications:
• One year experience as a Resident Assistant or multiple years as a student organization leader and/or directly related work experience and/or 1-2 years of experience in residence hall system preferred.
