Laboratory Specialist

Position Summary:
Laboratory Specialist sets up and breaks down laboratory experiments for general microbiology classes and assists in the same for the advanced microbiology classes. This position is responsible for preparing media, solutions, and reagents used in the microbiology teaching laboratories, assisting the laboratory manager and the laboratory coordinator with equipment maintenance as needed, and assisting graduate teaching assistants during class time and/or faculty instructors as requested.

Required Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of common laboratory equipment such as autoclaves, balances, pH meters, microscopes and spectrophotometers.
- Experience using laboratory equipment such as autoclaves, balances, pH meters, microscopes and spectrophotometers in the preparation of the types of media, reagents, and solutions that are used in the microbiology teaching laboratories.
- Experience and knowledge of microbiological laboratory principles, procedures, techniques, and safety regulations.
- Must be able to work independently with limited instruction, and with a team.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to accurately and concisely provide direction to the graduate and undergraduate students who use the teaching laboratory facilities and classrooms.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related discipline.
- Experience working in teaching labs.
