Position Summary
The Department of Entomology is seeking a fixed-term assistant professor to conduct research on arthropod behavior and pest management tactics using semiochemicals and other behavior modifying tactics in tree fruit systems. The initial duration of the appointment will be one year, with expectation of continued renewal based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

The focus of this position will be to conduct basic research on pheromones and other semiochemicals and develop technologies for managing insect pests that adversely impact Michigan's large and diverse tree fruit production industry. They will develop an independent and nationally recognized program supported by intramural and/or extramural funds with an emphasis on competitive grant programs. Other sources of support could include, but are not limited to: private industry, industry organizations, and private foundations.

Results stemming from research projects will be published in peer-reviewed journals, presented in local, state, national, and international presentations, and further disseminated using a wide array of electronic media. A collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to research and problem solving will be emphasized.

The successful candidate will be responsible for quantitative analysis of pheromones and plant as well as microbial volatiles using Gas Chromatograph, Mass Spectrometry and Volatile Capture Analysis. The successful candidate will coordinate behavioral research using insect flight tunnels, olfactometers and electroantennogram apparatus. The position will also entail the training of undergraduate and graduate students in the use of these behavioral research tools and techniques, theoretical concepts in chemical ecology, experimental design, data analysis and scientific writing and presentation.

Required Degree
Doctorate -Entomology or related field

Minimum Requirements
At least three years of post-doctoral experience conducting research on insect semiochemicals and their application in pest management with a proven track record of securing external funding. Specific research experience must include mating disruption and attract-and-kill pest management systems. The position also requires experience conducting: volatile headspace capture and gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer analysis of pheromones and plant semiochemicals and conducting behavioral assays using flight tunnels, olfactometers and electroantennogram apparatus. Documented evidence of experience in training undergraduate and graduate students in science is required.

Desired Qualifications
Preferred candidates will have experience conducting research in tree fruit systems.
