Position Summary
Basic Function:

Coordinates and assists in overseeing the operational activities of the new business development team at the Center for Global Connections in Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources (CGC) at Michigan State University. Performs office work directly related to the development of global new business opportunities in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR). This includes strategic analysis of new business opportunities, connecting with faculty, seeking out funding opportunities, developing partnerships, and engaging in grant development.

New Business Development 50%
  • Conduct market research
    • Seek out and track new business opportunities
    • Build and maintain relationships with prime contractors and donors
    • Provide strategic analysis of new business opportunities
  • Communicate directly and regularly with all stakeholders in relation to the global initiatives within CANR
  • Assists in provision of research compliance process components, including budget review and justification, feasibility, research billing process, conflict of interest reporting, program evaluation and monthly and annual reporting processes
  • Create reports, documents, and templates as related to new business development
  • Identify need for and provide training to faculty and staff
  • Provide operational expertise for assigned tasks and apply creative problem solving techniques to research and solve business problems to assist customers and provide potential solutions
  • Demonstrates awareness and appreciation for the global multi-dimensional and diverse perspectives within CGC and CANR, and makes decisions based upon inclusive excellence, data, facts, and best practices in order to expand the global portfolio in CANR

Research Administration (Pre-award/Grant) 50%
  • Coordinate pre-award proposals
    • Collects, analyzes, and synthesizes data using systematic methods such as research, surveys, focus groups, and other fact finding methods to identify new business opportunities
    • Serve as liaison between faculty and donors, contractors, and MSU central services
    • Coordinate proposal meetings, dissemination of information, ensure compliance with proposal solicitation and MSU requirements
    • Collect, create, and review supporting documents
    • Responsible for timely submission of proposals (w/ required MSU approvals)
    • Track proposal status, conduct post-proposal de-brief meetings
  • Prepare grant proposal budgets and budget narratives
    • Liaise with faculty and OSP

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
  • Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business Administration, Finance, or a research-related field;
  • One to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in performing responsibilities related to the operational activities of CGC or related experience;
  • Experience with proposal development, grant and contract administration, and research administration.
  • Experience with developing budgets
  • Experience in word processing, spreadsheet, and database software
  • or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of basic computer terminology and operations, ability to use e-mail and the Internet
  • Completion of MSU training certificate Essentials of Research Administration within one year of hire, if applicant has not already completed this course.
