Position Summary
The Hoffmann lab in the Department of Animal Science ( https://www.canr.msu.edu/ans ) and the Reproductive and Developmental Science Program (RDSP, http://rdsp.canr.msu.edu ) at Michigan State University is seeking a Research Assistant I. The Department of Animal Science and RDSP offers an exciting and unique environment for performing state-of-the-art biomedical, animal and basic research with top scientists in the field. The Hoffmann lab research goals focus on discovering novel genes involved in brain circuitry formation and are aimed at determining the genetic and molecular adaptation happening in the brain during seasonal changes in day length and shift work/jet lag conditions with a focus on the impact on reproduction and labor. This is an off-date position funded for one year from the date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

• Handling and caring for mice on a daily basis.
• Maintaining cell culture facilities and cell lines.
• Providing general technical assistance in support of the research team.
• Performing routine laboratory techniques: PCR, molecular biology assays, microscopy.
• Working with vendors, placing product orders and maintaining lab inventory on a day-to-day basis.
• Maintaining lab records and protocols.

Assists in coordinating research and laboratory operations in order to meet research goals; performs experimental tests and assays and records and analyzes results in order to provide conclusive data for research projects; consults with research supervisor in order to assist in planning and designing experiments; compiles and summarizes results and participates in preparing reports, manuscripts and articles for publication; acts as a resource person to internal and external individuals regarding research projects and experiments; oversees the compliance to laboratory safety regulations and procedures; reviews the work of research technicians and student employees; oversees laboratory needs and orders materials, supplies and equipment; operates, calibrates and maintains laboratory/field instruments and equipment in order to ensure proper functioning, accuracy and compliance with written specifications; researches literature in order to maintain a current knowledge of laboratory research methods and terminology.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic laboratory techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; the job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training; may require successful completion/continued maintenance of accessibility standards. This position requires, or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.

Desired Qualifications
Well organized and meticulous candidates with a background in biology/biochemistry/animal sciences or related, with B.A. or similar degree are welcome to apply. Experience working with mice and cell lines.
