Title: Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer
Purpose: The Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer (CDIO) serves as the primary advisor to the President on matters related to diversity, inclusion, and equity, offering consultation on both internal and external issues and opportunities.
The CDIO serves as a professional member of the Office of the President and has primary responsibility for providing vision and leadership in developing and promoting an institutional culture of diversity, inclusion, and equity across the Mount St. Joseph University Campus – at the student, faculty, and staff levels. The CDIO works closely with leaders of all divisional, school, and departmental units to develop and support initiatives related to diversity, inclusion, and equity – in a manner that supports and promotes the University’s Mission. Due to the nature and focus of the work, the CDIO works most closely with Admissions, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and Human Resources – developing, supporting, and coordinating recruitment, retention, and outreach programs that promote intercultural and diversity education for the entire campus community.
The CDIO provides leadership for the Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Council, which will include representation from each school and division, as well as serve as the Chairperson of the Diversity & Inclusion Task Force, as it completes its work.
The CDIO develops metrics applicable to diversity and inclusion initiatives and activities, across the University’s divisions and schools. The CDIO will also develop a dashboard to monitor, assess, and make periodic reports of results to all levels of management, leadership, and the Board of Trustees.
Duties:
- Provides leadership for the development of diversity-and-inclusion-related programs, services, and communications.
- Leads the design, implementation, and assessment of institutional diversity, inclusion, and equity initiatives to ensure alignment with the institution’s Mission and long term strategic plan.
- Serves as the University’s primary advisor on issues involving diversity and inclusion and how they relate to under-represented student, faculty, and staff groups.
- Provides overall leadership that fosters a culture of inclusion and equity, always conveying the message that every faculty and staff member and student is responsible for promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity across the campus – creating Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Champions across the Mount Community.
- Coordinates and supports the development and implementation of educational, cultural, and social programs that enhance an understanding of diversity and foster a campus climate that acknowledges and respects the uniqueness of all its members.
- Provides campus-wide initiatives (e.g., training) and communication strategies that promote understanding and appreciation of an inclusive campus community that values diversity, as proclaimed in the University’s Mission Statement.
- Leads efforts to provide opportunities for the campus community to learn about and respect diverse, ethnic, racial, and cultural identities, through programming (e.g., via welcome receptions, Black History Month, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrations).
- Supports Student Affairs in providing services, resources, mentoring, and initiatives that assist under-represented student groups, with a successful transition to, matriculation at, and graduation from, the University.
- Works in collaboration with Student Affairs in supporting and consulting with existing and new student organizations, including the Black Student Union, Hispanic/Latinx Student Union, and Spectrum.
- Maintains and enhances diversity and inclusion resources available to faculty, staff, and students.
- Plans, coordinates and develops community and college partnerships that promote diversity, inclusion and student involvement.
- Works in partnership with Director of Admissions in recruiting under-represented students and promoting the institution at college fairs.
- Works in partnership with the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement and Leadership to provide leadership training programs that enhance intercultural knowledge, skills and attitudes to navigate the world and achieve success in a meaningful professional life.
- Establishes and maintains ongoing assessment and evaluation of the quality of diversity in student life and recommends actions to ensure a high quality campus experience.
- Supports University teams for Orientation, Graduation, Registration, Get Acquainted Days, Admissions Open Houses, and Wellness Outreach, as well as appropriate Student Affairs programs and events.
- Works collaboratively with academic departments, and student service areas to advance diversity and retain under-represented students
- Works collaboratively with Human Resources, divisional leaders, and unit heads to advance faculty and staff diversity recruitment and retention efforts.
- Promotes diversity and inclusion through service on various college committees and task forces.
- Identifies opportunities to represent the University as CDIO on relevant external boards, councils, committees, etc.
- Contributes to team efforts by welcoming new and different work requirements, exploring new opportunities to enhance the services of the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, and helping others accomplish related job results as and where needed.

Supervision Received: Works toward defined goals and objectives developed with and through the University President. Plans and arranges own work. Reports to the University President.
Education: Master's Degree Required (preferably in college-student personnel, higher education administration, or counseling); earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree preferred.
Experience: Experience in counseling, advising, and/or education, program planning and implementation, and strong organizational, negotiations, and mediation skills.
Specialized Training: Knowledge related to issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity; experience working with a diversity of students, faculty, and staff; ability to lead, educate, counsel, and influence others.
