Position: Writer/Editor

Department: Office of Marketing and Communications

St. John's University seeks a writer/editor to produce a wide range of promotional materials for academic and administrative clients throughout the University including news and feature articles (for website content); newsletters; brochures; citations; videos; enrollment-related literature; and fundraising literature (e.g., brochures, e-mails, and appeal letters). The ability to shift priorities to accommodate urgent deadlines while maintaining unfailing accuracy is a must. This individual will collaborate with a proofreader to produce copy for high-visibility, top-priority projects. She/he should also be prepared to capture the voice and tone of the University culture. This person must be a skilled editor, as there will be a need to potentially overhaul major and smaller documents, letters, and other print pieces.

Requirements:

  • B.A./B.S. in English, Journalism, or related field
  • Three to five years of related experience
  • Strong communication and time management skills, with an ability to juggle multiple writing assignments under tight deadlines
  • Expertise with The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition (required)
  • Experience in higher education (preferred)
  • Outstanding attention to detail
  • Must have a proactive, problem-solving approach to projects
  • Adaptable to shifting priorities and responsive in accommodating urgent deadlines while maintaining unfailing accuracy under pressure
  • Position requires some evening and weekend work on important, high-visibility stories/assignments/special events during the academic year
  • For an applicant to be considered, she/he must submit three writing samples. A writing test will be administered (off-site) once a candidate is scheduled for an interview.
