Position Summary:
The Virginia Tech Department of Agricultural, Leadership, and Community Education ( ALCE ) is seeking an accomplished, visionary leader for the position of Department Head. The successful applicant will provide with credentials that will result in appointment as full professor with tenure.
Responsibilities of the Department Head include leadership of all department programs and administrative responsibility for strategic planning, fiscal management, and human resources. This includes recruitment, development, and retention of faculty and staff. The Department Head should provide effective advocacy for the department within and outside the university, and actively secure resources to strengthen its mission. The department is seeking an individual who will foster excellence in teaching, research, and extension, and encourage a positive, collegial climate and participatory decision-making process within the department. Ongoing university-wide strategic investments and priority setting in curriculum development and research activities will provide the Department Head with a unique opportunity to shape the academic mission and programs of the department.
The ALCE department currently consists of 21 faculty and staff, as well as 18 graduate students on assistantship funding, plus many others in online and professional programs. The department is housed in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (www.cals.vt.edu/) which has approximately 3,200 students across 10 academic units. (Virginia Tech's total enrollment is approximately 34,000.) The ALCE department is dedicated to advancing the institutional priorities related to community viability by engaging in critical and evaluative social science processes that address local and global challenges through three core areas: teaching and learning in agriculture; leadership and social change; and community education and development. The department is committed to preparing students for success in professions that include formal and non-formal teaching and learning in agriculture and community development, and equipping them with skills to lead agricultural organizations and communities. The faculty has successfully obtained research grants from USDA , NSF , USAID , eXtension, and state and industry sources. Additionally, faculty have been extensively involved in interdisciplinary collaboration within the university, as well as nationally and globally. Required Qualifications:
Evidence of visionary leadership in supporting and promoting excellence in teaching, research, and extension; Evidence of capacity to advocate for department vision and goals to university leadership and external stakeholders; Evidence of capacity to obtain donor support for department initiatives; Record of effective mentoring and management of personnel and financial resources; Excellent organizational and communication skills; Demonstrated ability to create and enhance effective collaboration within the department and with other programs and units at the university, state, national and international levels; Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a strategic plan; Record of academic and professional achievement commensurate with a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor at Virginia Tech; Demonstrated ability to attract extramural funding; Demonstrated commitment to recruiting, supporting, and collaborating with individuals from underrepresented populations.

Preferred Qualifications:
Evidence of international scholarship and recognition; Record of success with supervising and developing employees in a staff role; Experience developing educational programs for delivery in non-traditional formats (e.g., online and distance education); Work experience in secondary education and/or cooperative extension.
