Manager of General Accounting

Position Summary:
The Manager of General Accounting, under the direction of the Associate Controller for Accounting Operations is responsible for reviewing and evaluating the financial system for effective internal controls to ensure the reliability and integrity of the university's financial information; analyzing process flows and the integration of subsystems to the university's accounting system to ensure transactions and activity are recorded in the university's accounting system in accordance with GAAP ; independently establishing processing schedules and managing the operation of the central accounting system to include month and fiscal year-end close; leading and directing technology projects to include testing periodic system upgrades and new system implementations; developing, implementing, following and communicating financial policies and procedures; creating ad hoc financial reports to assist university departments with finance reporting needs; managing the reconciliation of University records to state records and bank accounts; assuring correct posting of university receipts; and monitoring accounts to ensure efficient, accurate, and timely reporting of accounting events upon which financial reporting of all types depends.
The Manager of General Accounting supervises a team of two direct reports and six indirect reports who oversee the maintenance and granting of employee access for the Banner Finance, HokieMart, and other central systems; support the Banner Finance help line; provide training for new employees in the areas of Banner Finance navigation, general accounting query, and finance web reporting; perform audits of departmental journal entry transfers and is responsible for Banner Finance daily batch updating, month-end close, and year-end close; reconcile the university's bank accounts, the Banner Finance system to the State's Accounting System, and various other reconciliations.

Required Qualifications:
• Master's degree in Accounting or allied field or Bachelor's degree and significant related experience.
• Considerable knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
• Considerable knowledge of accounting operations and internal accounting control procedures especially in an automated environment.
• Demonstrated ability to develop, evaluate, and modify internal control systems to ensure financial transactions are reliable, efficient, effective, and compliant with applicable federal, state and university policies, laws, and regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement accounting policies and procedures, to develop and enhance automated workflow/processes and systems to support general accounting, and to provide a leadership role for direct and indirect reports.
• Demonstrated evidence of advanced problem solving and analytical skills.
• Advanced spreadsheet and data analytics experience, including manipulation of large data sets, to analyze, summarize and present financial and narrative information clearly.
• Working knowledge of large financial Enterprise Resource Planning systems and fund accounting.
• Strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and decentralized environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Certified Public Accountant license ( CPA ).
• Knowledge of Virginia Tech's financial and academic policies and procedures.
• Experience using Banner database system.
• Experience working in a higher education institution, or a similar large public, or private, decentralized organization.
• Demonstrated experience developing implementing, and communicating financial policies and procedures.
• Demonstrated technology proficiency in business intelligence tools such as MicroStrategy or Tableau for reporting and analysis.
• Direct experience in human resources management to include recruiting, performance management, employee relations, and/or training/development.
