Director of Graduate Student Programs

Position Summary:
The Director of Graduate Student Programs is responsible for developing, leading, and implementing the strategic student success, professional development and recruitment/retention plan for Virginia Tech's College of Engineering graduate programs. The Director will work under the direction of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies and coordinate closely with staff in the CoE Dean's office, and the Virginia Tech Graduate school.
Core Responsibilities:
-Develop, implement and assess programs that contribute to the recruitment, retention and professional success of CoE graduate students
-Advise and counsel students within the College to foster student success
-Recommend and participate in the development of College policies and procedures; serving on college and university committees that pertain to graduate student programs, progress, and success
-Collaborate with the graduate school and departments on recruitment and retention initiatives, including leading and/or training the graduate coordinators participation in the initiatives
-Manage graduate student funding process and communication to departments about graduate funding, including securing grants and fellowships that can be used to support graduate students; performing periodic cost and goal attainment analyses in cooperation with the Dean's Office fiscal staff
-Represent the College to various institutional divisions as well as externally to governmental agencies, corporations, students, and/or the general public
-Leads the development of proposal development to federal and state agencies, industry and potential donors in support of graduate programs
-Support graduate inclusion and diversity initiates in coordination with CoE Leadership
-Execute the New Horizon Graduate Scholars Program and the Graduate Peer Mentoring Group -Serve as the GEM National Consortium institutional liaison and support the functions of the GEM Executive Board at the national level -Establish and sustain pipeline relationships with HBCU and minority serving institutions -Ensures compliance with the University, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations

Required Qualifications:
-PhD degree in education, counseling, engineering or field of study related to area of assignment
-Experience in leading and implementing recruitment and retention programs (emphasis on graduate level) in a higher education environment
-Strong professional manner of communication skills with both students and university leadership including the ability to compose professional correspondence and make public presentations
-Demonstrated organizational and analytical skills and the experience with developing and maintaining spread sheets to manage operations of the office
-Experience maintaining a professional and mature demeanor and calm people in emotional situations
-Sensitivity to cultural and ethnic differences
-Knowledge of/experience with recruitment strategies and mechanisms of student retention, student development theories and counseling skills
-Experience in securing funding for programs and events
-Service-oriented attitude with passion for working with students
-Demonstrated attention to accurate detail
-Experience maintaining confidentiality
-Willingness to travel and occasional evening and weekend work

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience interfacing with graduate students, industry partners, university administrators, emphasizing the ability to cultivate strong relationships among faculty, program partners and positive experiences for graduate students
-Excellent communication skills and experience in making formal presentations to medium to large groups
-A broad knowledge of university policies and procedures
-Experience working effectively with all university constituents
-Fluent in social media platforms (Facebook and Twitter) for promoting relevant student programming and events; recruiting prospective graduate students
-Experience working independently; attention to detail; multitask and manage several projects simultaneously
-A desire to publish in fields related to graduate student success and program piloting and assessment of outcomes
