POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Mechanical Engineering, to conduct research on the smart device network with implementation on underground water distribution pipe systems. With the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT), there are now an increasing variety of sensors and actuators that can be used on the water pipe systems. We envision a methodology to select, combine, and coordinate those devices in order to realize advanced functions including self-regulating, leak localization, and pipe burst prevention. Will develop an interactive model of a representative water pipe network that can simulate specific water pipe events such as usage surge, leakage, and blockage; derive the technical requirements for a smart network of devices such as device types, network density, and performance requirements to realize specific network function; develop an interactive model of the smart device network and test them on specific water pipe events; design, build, and experiment the smart device network in a facility and in a field tests; investigate control algorithms of a swarm of mobile robots in a geometrically and dynamically constrained environment such as an active pipe network; investigate how this system would scale with cities of different sizes; and lead, recruit, train, and mentor a team of graduate students and undergraduate students on this project.

Job Requirements
REQUIRED: Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a related field; and research experience with system engineering, IoT system-level design, smart grid, network modeling, simulation and constrained optimization, fluid dynamics, hydrodynamics or hydraulics, signal processing, system dynamics and probability, or dynamics and control of robotics.
