Assistant Professor in Arts Administration and Museum Studies

The Department of Art & Art History in the School of Fine Arts at the University of Connecticut invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Arts Administration and Museum Studies. This tenure-line position offers the opportunity to teach in the expanding Arts Administration curriculum at UConn and help advance the program into the future. Teaching will be divided between graduate and undergraduate online and in-person classes that emphasize the diversity of knowledge and experience needed to approach arts administration in the 21st century and provide students a foundation in the dialogues and theories concerning museums and their historical and contemporary roles.

This position will demand a person attentive to visual culture and arts administration scholarship as well as someone able to engage critical dialogues concerning grant and fundraising strategies and management, foster the need to create communities and audiences reflecting diversity, and help both undergraduate and graduate students navigate the changing role of technology in education and outreach. This position will also need a person active and engaged in the field to guide students into internships, job searches, and graduate degree programs. Finally, we seek a scholar who will reach out and engage the faculty at UConn with scholarly collaborative projects, shared programming, and unique pedagogical opportunities for students.

The University of Connecticut is experiencing a transformational period of growth supported by the $1.7B Next Generation Connecticut ( http://nextgenct.uconn.edu/ ) and the $1B Bioscience Connecticut ( http://biosciencect.uchc.edu/ ) investments and a bold new Academic Plan: Path to Excellence ( http://issuu.com/uconnprovost/docs/academic-plan-single-hi-optimized_1 ). We are pleased to continue these investments by inviting applications for a faculty position in Art & Art History.

Currently, the Arts Administration MFA program at UConn features a 3-year curriculum, is highly individualized, and divided into two main parts: the core curriculum, which all MFA students are required to take, and advanced research and training in each student's chosen area of expertise within the general field of arts administration. Examples of areas of specialization include: Fundraising & Development, Marketing, General Management, Labor Relations, Executive Leadership, Strategic Planning, Strategic Partnerships, Community Engagement, Advocacy, and Budgeting and Finance. The undergraduate program is growing and this position will be crucial to seeing those classes expanded and also integrated with visual culture curriculum already established at UConn. This position will spend time at the new UConn Arts Administration Center at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford and at the main Storrs campus.

This tenure line will be positioned in the Department of Art & Art History which has over 170 undergraduate majors, 15 graduate students, and a full-time faculty of 21, along with a number of specialist adjunct faculty and a committed team of staff. The department is dedicated to the cultivation of artists and scholars with a wide-ranging understanding of the concepts, aesthetics, techniques, and social functions of contemporary art practices within broader historical and cultural contexts. It would be hoped that this position will serve to connect the curricular and scholarly goals of both the Art and Art History department and the Arts Administration Program.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship through extramural funding; high quality publications; impact as measured through citations, performances and/or exhibits, as appropriate to the candidate's research agenda; and national recognition, as through honorific awards. In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.
