Computer Support Specialist

Position Summary:
The Computer Support Specialist serves as a member of the Information Technology group and is responsible for providing high quality helpdesk support to BI's two physical locations. The computer support specialist will provide end-user support for workstations, support and maintenance of computer systems, hardware and software assistance and repairs, hardware and software inventory and upgrades and recovery plans of complex systems and servers. Will be expected to assist system administrators and the scientific programmers in troubleshooting technical issues and document resolutions. Will be responsible for the timely attention to and resolution of IT-related trouble tickets received through BI's request tracking system. Will contribute to the development and maintenance of an effective and cohesive technical support team. Will be responsible for researching and testing new software for implementation for use at BI. Will also be responsible for adhering to established equipment inventory and surplus procedures.
This position will provide technical support for both of BI's locations, one in Blacksburg and one in the National Capital Region ( NCR ) located in the Ballston area of Arlington, VA in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Travel to BI's NCR location will be required periodically.
In accordance with the university's hiring procedures for non-student positions, this position will require a conviction check.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent training and experience in a support environment.
- Detailed and comprehensive knowledge of computer hardware and software.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, TCP /IP Networking, and MacOS X, installation of software and account set up.
- Dependable work history, willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule and overtime as needed.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, ability to take initiative in finding solutions and manage multiple project simultaneously.
- Strong customer services skills with demonstrated prioritizing and time management, problem solving skills and ability to communicate technical issues easily to a wide audience with varying levels of IT knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Linux or experience working in a help desk environment.
