Director of the Center for Sports Communication


Brief Summary:

Marist College invites applicants to serve as Director of the Center for Sports Communication, a hub of research, curricular, and service activity in the field. Created in 2002, Marist has one of the nation's largest and oldest concentrations in sports communication, part of the communication major that enrolls over 650 majors. Founded in October of 2011, the Center for Sports Communication promotes the study of and practice in sports communication, helping to prepare an enlightened and engaged group of future leaders in one of society's most far reaching disciplines. The center serves a variety of publics, including most notably Marist students, but also affiliated Marist faculty and staff, working professionals in sports media and communication, and the greater community with interests in the field. Marist will continue to be an academic leader in this vital field of remarkable public interest. The goals of the Center include:
1) Creating unique educational opportunities for Marist students that will enhance student experiences, increase the visibility of Marist's program, and attract an increasingly competitive student population from across the nation.
2) Creating strong relationships between Marist and prominent external agencies in sports communication.
3) Developing and maintaining a program of research in sports communication.
4) Creating and producing professional sports media that reaches external audiences through unique partnerships.
5) Providing community service as related to the center's mission to both internal and external publics.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and develop major Center partnerships, including working with the Department of Athletics ESPN3 initiative
  • Oversee bi-annual Marist College Lifetime Excellent in Sports Communication Award dinner and ceremony
  • Develop networking events, workshops, and speaker series
  • Oversee the Summer Sports Communication Institute, a pre-college program for high school juniors and seniors
  • Supervise the Sports Communication student interns
  • Manage the Center's budget
  • Spearhead thought leadership initiatives


Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in communication and/or relevant field or extensive related work history in sports communication required.
  • Must have experience working with college students and some management or administrative experience.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to identify and set priorities, multi-task, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with a diverse range of students (including those with special needs), faculty and staff.
