Benefits Specialist


Job Summary:

The benefits specialist is responsible for assisting with the administration of all benefits and retirement programs, including group health, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, worker's compensation, life insurance, flexible spending plan, 403(b) plan and processing for the 457 plan. The Benefits Specialist provides front-line Benefit Department customer service to employees and retirees. This role ensures compliance with National and Local legal requirements; prepares, reviews and administers department invoices; and prepares reconciliation reports.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Benefits Manager to make recommendations for enhanced processes and controls for all benefits provided by the university
  • Document and maintain administrative procedures for assigned benefits processes. Ensure compliance with applicable government regulations. Ensure timeliness and accuracy of required reporting and fees.
  • Process and administer leave-of-absence requests and disability paperwork: medical, disability, PFL, FMLA and ADA.
  • Ensure and document interactive process for both FMLA and ADA.
  • Complete Workers' Compensation information related to all incidences that occur on campus.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for managing the 403(b) plans and nonqualified deferred compensation plans and processes
  • Assist with the coordination between audit and the 403 (b) service providers, as needed
  • Provide reports, analysis and trends as requested
  • Monitor, update and correct plan processing and payroll issues
  • Audit the accuracy of information in the HRIS and BSWIFT systems
  • Respond to employee inquires and resolve employee issues related to plans
  • Assist when required with plan reporting requirements
  • Liaise and collaborate with plan service providers, benefit consultants, carriers/vendors and legal as needed
  • Enroll employees with carriers and process life status changes.
  • Administer the Tuition Exchange Program
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or related experience
  • Three years' experience with a minimum of two years within HR and/or benefits administration.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Detailed oriented
  • Demonstrated experience with MS Office, particularly Excel, access a plus
