Music Director and Organist - University Chaplaincy

This is a part time position, working 7 hours per week.

The Tufts University Chaplaincy is a dynamic hub, supporting religious, spiritual, ethical, and cultural life for all members of the Tufts community. We provide pastoral care, support religious and philosophical communities, educate about spiritual and ethical issues in society and the world, and promote multifaith engagement.

The University Chaplain leads the University Chaplaincy team, which currently includes chaplains or residents serving the following communities: Africana, Buddhist, Catholic, Humanist, Jewish, Muslim, and Protestant. Staff include the Program Manager, Chaplaincy Coordinator, Music Director and Organist, and 10-12 student workers.

Plays organ and piano and leads singing for weekly worship services; programs the monthly carillon tune and provides educational notes about the tune; plans and plays for periodic musical events several times each year (including the Halloween Midnight Organ Recital, Winter Holiday Concert, Ash Wednesday, and Good Friday); and coordinates diverse musical offerings for the Baccalaureate Service and other concerts, ceremonies, and rituals as needed. Plays organ or piano as needed for university memorial services and plays the carillon for Matriculation and Commencement. Oversees the care and maintenance of the University Chaplaincy s instruments and the vetting of potential players.


Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
  • Proficiency in performance on pipe organ, piano, carillon, and voice, including classical music, traditional hymnody, and contemporary music.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications, and organizational skills.
  • Creativity and flexibility, initiative, responsiveness, detail orientation, and follow through.
  • Understanding of and skills in implementing programming through a student-empowerment approach (i.e., proactive outreach, cultivating leadership and planning groups, mentoring student leaders).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with highly diverse populations, religious and philosophical literacy, and multicultural awareness.
  • Excellent discretion for carefully managing sensitive information.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Vision of the role and opportunities for a music program within a vibrant multifaith university chaplaincy.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:

12 month, part-time position with weekend, evening, religious holiday and seasons work. Must be available when services are needed. Advance notice for time away is required to ensure proper substitutes are available. Assists in arranging substitutes.
