Laboratory Technician 1 (UCP 3), REPOST


The Department of Chemistry at the University of Connecticut is seeking a Laboratory Technician 1 (UCP 3) to assist in servicing chemistry courses on the Storrs campus. This position is part of the department's Teaching Laboratory Services unit, which supports the Chemistry Department's undergraduate laboratory operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Prepare and test routine laboratory experiments for undergraduate courses. Assist in modification of experiments as needed.
  2. Work with a full range of chemicals to prepare reagents and solutions for experiments.
  3. Set up and maintain equipment for laboratory experiments. Dismantle, clean, and inspect equipment after use.
  4. Create and provide procedural notes for teaching assistants, and assist TAs with routine technical problems related to laboratory exercises.
  5. Assist with identifying and resolving routine experimental problems.
  6. Assist in maintenance and minor repair of lab equipment to ensure safe use and proper operation.
  7. Monitor inventory levels and assure security of supplies and equipment.
  8. Assist in creating and maintaining appropriate records including standard operating procedures, experimental checklists and safety documentation.
  9. Work assigned schedule, which varies by semester to support morning, afternoon and evening classes, with the possible future addition of weekend classes.
  10. Assist with enforcement of departmental safety rules.
  11. Perform related tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related field, demonstrated familiarity with concepts, practices and standard laboratory procedures in chemistry, demonstrated knowledge of commonly accepted safety practices in chemistry, demonstrated ability to explain laboratory procedures, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, excellent attention to detail, ability to work weekends and evenings as needed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

B.S. degree in Chemistry, familiarity with FTIR and NMR analysis, prior work experience in a laboratory setting, experience writing and communicating laboratory procedures and results in a professional setting, and experience using database programs.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 12-month position, with an anticipated start date of June 1st. The University offers a competitive salary and outstanding benefits.
