COMMUNICATION STUDIES (FORENSICS) INSTRUCTOR

Full-Time Tenure Track Faculty Position

Position Description:

College of the Canyons is seeking a faculty leader in the area of Communication Studies (Forensics).  This is a 10-MONTH professional, full-time tenure track position beginning fall 2018.  The position may include a combination of teaching, department, college, and community leadership functions.  Assignment may include day, evening, and weekend duties at all District sites.  

 

DUTIES OF THE POSITION

Teaches a full load (combination of Forensics and Communication Studies courses) between both campuses. The primary responsibilities of this position include: faculty leadership and assisting lead faculty of the Forensics program.

Travels to local, statewide, and national tournaments.

Assists in the development and monitoring of program budgets.

Assists in strategic development and implementation of fundraising initiatives, including team showcases and grant opportunities.

Assists in recruiting and providing daily direction to assistant and alumni speech coaches.

Develops and teaches in secondary areas, including Fundamentals of Public Speaking, Strategies of Argumentation, Oral Interpretation, Small Group Communication, Communication Theory, Interpersonal Communication, Communication and Gender, Intercultural Communication and other courses as needed.

Assists in development and management of other competitive opportunities, e.g. rookie and intramural tournaments, and other activities designed to promote the program and public speaking skills.

Assists in recruitment and selection process of Forensics team members.

Assists with developing and sustaining community partners and establishes student outreach activities.

Assists with team promotional needs, including press releases, online video, social media, etc.

Advises, assists, evaluates and mentors students. 

Develops and updates Communication Studies and Forensics curriculum, keeping in mind the needs of transfer institutions and/or community business partners.

Participates in student learning outcome assessments.

Maintains office hours and participates in department, division, and college committees and governance.

Participates in and implements departmental and college program reviews. 

Participates in additional faculty responsibilities, including college decision-making activities related to professional and academic matters. The activities will occur both within the department as well as in the larger College setting.

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:  

Possession of an unexpired California Community College Instructor Credential in Communication Studies;

OR

Master’s degree in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication;

OR

Bachelor’s degree in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication AND Master’s degree in drama/theater arts, mass communication, or English;

OR 

Equivalency: Any Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education AND completion of 24 semester units in the discipline at the upper division and graduate level, a minimum of which must be 12 graduate level semester units.
