Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Journalism at San Diego City College beginning Fall 2018. One of three colleges in the San Diego Community College District, City College is an urban campus, minutes away from a world-class zoo and Balboa Park, providing academic and vocational offerings to meet the needs of a diverse student population. Assignment may include some combination of day, evening,Saturday, and/or off-campus classes. While the current vacancy is at City College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.

Major Responsibilities:
The Assistant Professor will supervise and instruct students in Journalism, and other classes as assigned; will be responsible for the production of ongoing student digital and print news productions including newspaper, magazine and web-based platforms; integrate technology into the classroom and in a lab setting; supervise labs; participate in department meetings; attend school meetings; assist with curriculum development and revision; maintain office hours or student advisement and counseling; participate in various college committees to assist in shared governance; and, fulfill the responsibilities of a community college instructor in accordance with the District-adopted description.

Qualifications:
Masters in journalism or communication with aspecialization in journalismORBachelors in either of the aboveANDMasters in English, history, communication, literature,composition, comparative literature, any social science,business, business administration, marketing, graphicsor photographyOR the equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have: - Academic preparation and experience in Journalism related instruction. - Firsthand experience producing both print and digital journalism. - Firsthand experience in the role of copy editor, advisor, and supervisor of digital and print news production. - Demonstrated knowledge of Journalism and other media related software. - Demonstrated ability to optimize student learning through the implementation of contemporary philosophies and methods of instruction and assessment in the teaching of Journalism. - Continuing Professional growth in Journalistic production and related fields. - Demonstrated ability to work closely and cooperatively with students and colleagues in support of a positive, productive, and professional academic environment. - Ability to build relationships with industry professionals and organizations in order to advance the academic program. - Ability to assume some coordination responsibilities in a Journalism program and to work cooperatively with faculty, staff and administrators. - Effective Oral and Written Communication. - Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge in working with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.

Licenses:


Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A Class 6, Step C ($5,754.92 $7,754.42) per month based on the current AFT COLLEGE Faculty Tenured-Tenured Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
