Director, Teaching and Learning Assessment (Academic Assistant 3)


The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) is seeking a Director of Teaching and Learning Assessment. The Director of Teaching and Learning Assessment supports University-wide efforts to enhance teaching effectiveness by partnering with faculty, departments, and schools to advance formative and summative assessment of teaching and learning. The successful candidate will provide strategic direction and leadership related to ensuring evaluation of teaching is conducted utilizing a variety of evidence-based techniques, including but not limited to peer evaluation and teaching portfolios. The Director of Teaching and Learning Assessment is expected to act independently within the goals and objectives of CETL and the guidelines established in implementing and delivering programming, services, and content.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Designing models to assist faculty in documentation of teaching through the use of student, self, and peer evaluation tools;
  • Developing and supporting a university-wide peer observation initiative;
  • Collaborating with academic units and schools to develop or advance department or school specific teaching and learning evaluation strategies;
  • Developing processes for evaluation of adjunct faculty in collaboration with academic departments;
  • Conducting teaching observations of faculty and graduate students;
  • Designing models and delivering programming, resources, and consultations to assist faculty in documentation of teaching through the use of formative and summative evaluation tools;
  • Providing thought leadership related to teaching portfolios and support to new and adjunct faculty to develop teaching portfolios;
  • Consulting with individual faculty to develop research projects related to the scholarship of teaching and learning as a means to demonstrate teaching effectiveness, particularly in collaboration with CETL's Associate Director of STEM Scholarship of Teaching and Learning;
  • Developing and creating teaching and instructional resources to be disseminated in training sessions, on CETL's website, via social media, and through listservs pertaining to teaching evaluation, peer observation, and teaching portfolios;
  • Engaging in scholarly work on evaluation of teaching;
  • Overseeing instructor development programming and consultations for graduate students, including orientation;
  • Developing and implementing collaborative teaching talks and faculty development workshops that promote best practices in teaching and elevation of learning outcomes; and
  • Consulting with faculty to improve, modify, or innovate teaching and learning outcomes.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

The Director of Teaching and Learning Assessment (AAUP Academic Assistant 3) will report to the Executive Director of Faculty Development. This is a full-time, 11-month position. Ability to work onsite daily at the Storrs campus is required with occasional travel to regional campuses. Salary is commensurate with background and experience. This position includes a benefits package.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. PhD/EdD, or Master's degree with extensive experience
  2. Knowledge of best practices in teaching and learning, particularly related to teaching evaluation, peer observation, teaching portfolios, and the scholarship of teaching and learning
  3. Exceptional interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to develop trusting relationships and provide effective feedback
  4. Strong problem solving, analytical, observational, and listening skills
  5. Excellent organizational, presentation, and oral and written communication skills
  6. Ability to design and deliver effective workshops, training courses/curricula and informational materials appropriate to initiatives
  7. Demonstrated ability to integrate principles of diversity and inclusion into programs and practices
  8. Demonstrated ability to establish collaborative partnerships and work across administrative units, ranks, disciplines with people from all parts of the University, and a commitment to promote diversity and inclusion

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Record of research in the area of evaluation of teaching and learning and the scholarship of teaching and learning
  2. Record of observing instruction and offering recommendations for pedagogical improvement and innovation that enhances teaching and learning outcomes

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full time, 11-month position. Salary is commensurate with background and experience and includes a full benefits package.
