Job Description
Florida Gulf Coast University ( FGCU ) is seeking a Garden Leader for a new container garden located at our SoVi residential dining hall patio. The goal of the garden is to demonstrate sustainable growing practices and to produce food that can be used at the dining hall or for catered events. This is a part-time position and the weekly hours will vary based on the time of year. In general, this position will be scheduled to work 5-10 hours per week. More hours may be needed while establishing the garden and during weeks where there is high demand for garden tours. This person will be an employee of FGCU but will collaborate regularly with our contracted dining partner and their associates.

Required Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience gardening with organic and sustainable practices. He/she will be personable, work well in teams, feel comfortable sharing their knowledge with small groups, and have a flexible schedule.

$8.00 - $10.00 hourly (based on experience)

Job Duties

Essential Job Duties
• Attend a day-long Produce Safety Alliance Training that covers Good Agricultural Practices and Food Safety Plans.
• Write a Food Safety Plan for the garden and establish procedures to implement that plan. The Garden Leader will be responsible for all aspects of the Food Safety Plan and food safety for the garden.
• Oversee the design and planting of the SoVi Garden.
• Collaborate with the SoVi Chef to create planting and harvesting schedules that align with menu needs. This will require coordinating with the Chef and SoVi Dining Director to log harvests and transport harvests to chefs using the proper safety and sanitation practices.
• Create and maintain a garden that is functional as a food production area and a living classroom, is aesthetically pleasing, and demonstrates the natural process of growth and decomposition.
• Maintain inventory, cleanliness, and function of daily-use tools and supplies as well as practicing proper safety and sanitation procedures while tending the garden.
• Ensure cleanliness, order, and safety of the working environment.
• Manage all aspects of planning, planting, and harvesting. This includes submitting purchase requests for supplies and developing an annual plan that stays within the allotted budget for the project.
• Plant seeds and seedling plugs, transplant seeds and cuttings, propagate cuttings, prepare containers for planting, and monitor plant nutrition.
• Interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, dining staff, volunteers, visitors, and all members of the campus community.
• Lead informational tours to small groups and classes.
• Other duties as assigned.
