Benefits Specialist


Brief Summary:

The Benefits Specialist is responsible for managing leaves of absence and the day-to-day operations of employee benefit plans and programs including medical, dental, prescription, vision, life insurance, disability, flexible spending, tuition benefit, retirement, and retiree health exchange. This individual will serve as the first point of contact for all faculty, staff, and retirees regarding leaves and benefit related activity.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage leave of absence process for all employee groups, counsel and inform employees of rights and responsibilities, issue timely leave and wage replacement eligibility notices, manage recordkeeping for FMLA and other leaves of absence, etc.
  • Manage enrollment, changes, and termination of coverage in all benefit plans; ensure compliance with federal and state rules, maintain and track all benefit enrollment eligibility and activity, etc.
  • Offer individual benefits counseling and problem-solving support to faculty and staff, resolve sensitive benefit-related issues, and coordinate benefit related events and activities.
  • Approve and process all tuition benefits.
  • Conduct new hire benefit orientation and coordinate pension on-campus counseling sessions.
  • Assist with benefits-related communications and policy revisions.
  • Distribute initial COBRA notices and qualifying event eligibility notices.
  • Processs carrier invoices, deposits and other payables/receivables.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 1-3 years of experience in benefits administration required. Must have excellent customer service skills and the ability to work independently. Must be detail oriented and possess strong presentation skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is preferred.
