Lab Coordinator II

PAY GRADE: 30E

CONTEXT OF JOB:

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The University of Delaware is leading a major node in the new Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment (RAPID) Manufacturing Institute led by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) focusing on catalysis and reactors, and will also be involved in other dimensions of RAPID's research and development agenda led by other universities.

Under general direction of the Director, the Lab Coordinator II will work with an interdisciplinary team of researchers.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design, fabricate, construct, setup and troubleshoot reactors and separation units for process intensification. Conduct experiments in these systems and write reports.
  • Work effectively with industrial partners.
  • Assist faculty, graduate students, post doctoral and early career researchers in setting up and troubleshooting reactors and equipment.
  • Implement various safety policies, procedures, and standards to ensure effective laboratory operation and compliance with Federal, State, and the University regulations and standards.
  • Manage laboratory chemical inventory, supplies, parts and instruments essential to the operation of the laboratory, including ordering and procurement.
  • Operate common analytical instruments (Gas Chromatograph (GC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Mass Spectrometry (MS)).
  • Provide direction to researchers in conducting experiments.
  • Perform miscellaneous job related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, engineering, or related discipline and four or more years of experience in laboratory operations, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of reactor design, construction, troubleshooting, and operation.
  • Industrial experience in setting up flow reactors for gas-phase and liquid-phase reactions and separations is preferable. Experience with microwaves is a plus.
  • Knowledge of common analytical instruments is a plus.
  • Industrial experience commensurate with major responsibilities.
  • Skill in organizing resources, establishing priorities and independent planning.
  • Exercise of independent judgment and discretion as well as the utilization of advanced technical and operational skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Extensive experience working collaboratively with researchers of diverse communities.
