Diana Davis Spencer Endowed Chair of Social Entrepreneurship

Wheaton College, a leading liberal arts institute located in Norton, Massachusetts, invites applications for an inaugural five-year, renewable term, Diana Davis Spencer Endowed Chair of Social Entrepreneurship. The successful candidate is expected to be a thought leader within their academic field, and to engage in teaching, research, and service activities.

This opportunity is made possible through a transformative grant from Wheaton alumni Diana Davis Spencer '60 and the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation. Ms. Spencer and the foundation believe in the transformative power of entrepreneurship, and with this support Wheaton will strengthen its position as a leader among liberal arts colleges in integrating social entrepreneurship into the study of the liberal arts and sciences. The Chair is expected to play a lead role in furthering this goal. The Chair is also expected to lead the campus in adding to the curricular options for students to study social entrepreneurship as part of the Business and Management major at Wheaton.

Embedded in the liberal arts, Wheaton's Business and Management major also fosters sustained connections with other disciplinary and interdisciplinary components of a Wheaton education. Embodying the focus on an interdisciplinary approach to business, students build on the core curriculum by choosing one of five interdisciplinary concentrations to complete their major: Analytics and New Media; Policy, Nonprofits, and the Arts; Globalization and Development; Society and the Environment; and Equality, Diversity, and Social Responsibility. By integrating social entrepreneurship into the gateway course for the major, the Chair will work with faculty to develop a cross-disciplinary social entrepreneurship concentration, and expand the course options in social entrepreneurship and related fields. The Chair will also provide leadership in connecting the curriculum with existing co-curricular programs in social entrepreneurship and in using the resources provided by the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation grant to grow these programs. The Chair will be a member of the Business and Management faculty and help to continue the dynamic growth and development of a major that has become one of the largest in the College since it began four years ago.

Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates should have an outstanding record of scholarship and demonstrated record of leadership with a social entrepreneurship focus as well as experience in mentorship. Academics holding a doctoral degree and qualified for tenure as either Associate or Full Professor will be considered.

Application review will begin on November 1, 2018. Applicants that desire full consideration are encouraged to apply by that date; however, the position will remain open until filled. The following are to be submitted via Wheaton's online application system: letter of application, curriculum vitae, evidence of teaching effectiveness, statements of both research and teaching philosophy, a list of at least 3 professional references*, and a vision statement regarding social entrepreneurship at Wheaton.

*Please note that references will not be contacted until later stages of the search process, and will only be contacted with candidate permission.

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates from both business and non-business disciplines will be considered, but should have a relevant background in social innovation, social enterprise, social entrepreneurship or other experience in educating students to develop action-oriented solutions to social problems. Professional experience or a demonstrated ability in utilizing innovation and entrepreneurship to develop sustainable solutions to societal issues is desirable. The successful candidate will demonstrate a clear understanding of the value of a liberal arts education, and will be able to articulate the unique importance of a liberal arts approach to social entrepreneurship and Business and Management overall.
