Academic Advisor 1 (UCP 5)


The Center for Academic Programs' (CAP) seeks candidates for an Academic Advisor for the Student Support Services (SSS) program at the Storrs campus. The SSS program develops and implements initiatives for the recruitment, retention, and graduation of low income, first generation to college, and underrepresented students through its pre-collegiate summer program and year round undergraduate services.

Some of the primary responsibilities are to advise and counsel students in planning an academic program as it relates to their education and career goals; monitor student progress and compliance with scholastic standards, plans of study, course and graduation requirements; interpret academic regulations and serve as a resource for students, faculty, parents and others having questions about programs, academic policies, scholarship/award opportunities and other pertinent information; review and make recommendations regarding warning, suspension, academic probation or dismissal; administer and interpret various placement and assessment tools used in academic and career development; plan and be responsible for scheduling and registration activities, orientation programs, career planning workshop and other similar activities; assist with project evaluation and data collection needed for project performance reports; compile program and student data and prepare reports; and supervise, train, evaluate and assign work to student workers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to program to be served; one to two years experience advising students; demonstrated ability to perform administrative functions; excellent communication, interpersonal and counseling skills; demonstrated strong writing skills; knowledge of academic programs in area to be served; ability to troubleshoot problems that interfere with the student's academic progress and work effectively to resolve them; and knowledge of issues and challenges faced by underrepresented populations to be served.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree; experience advising students at a college or university, experience teaching and/or conducting workshops; experience working with low-income, first-generation and underrepresented college students; bilingual English/Spanish.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

Salary is in the mid 40's and includes full benefits. This is a full time, end-date position, subject to annual renewal.
