Manager of Collections and Exhibitions

The ODU Museum Foundation, operating as the new Barry Art Museum on the Norfolk campus, requires a Manager of Collections and Exhibitions who will be a critical member of a small team launching a new art museum within the University. This position will be responsible for the care, custody, control of, and access to all artworks that are either Museum property or loaned to the Museum, as well as have responsibility for all permanent museum displays and temporary exhibitions.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree OR a bachelor's degree with advanced certification and/or work experience equivalent to a master's degree in art, art history, museum studies, or a closely related field. Lift truck certification. Considerable experience in the storage, protection, handling and moving, and the care of fine arts and archival documents. Considerable museum or archive experience with one or more areas of registration, collections management, touring exhibitions. Some experience working with collection management databases. Considerable knowledge of museum collections management and conservation standards and good practices. Considerable knowledge of nomenclature and museum cataloging methods. Some knowledge of museum exhibit development standards and good practices. Some knowledge of legal matters related to the collections storage, collection movement, insurance requirements for collections, as well as the copyright laws and policies governing rights and reproductions. Some knowledge of AAM standards for collections management. Proficient skill in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher. Some skill in the use of photo manipulation and database software. High level of accuracy and attention to detail and ability to work independently. Proactive in independent work, with a high level of discretion and confidentiality. Ability to establish and maintain productive, cordial working relationships, and communicate orally and in writing in English with a wide variety of staff, volunteers, educators, and community members. Ability to efficiently and effectively develop policies and procedural standards. Ability to follow established procedures for the documentation and movement of fine art.

Preferred Qualifications
Considerable experience in a comparable position within an art museum in higher education. Some experience in a supervisory capacity of students and/or volunteers. Some experience working with The Museum System ( TMS ).

Conditions of Employment
Virginia State Police Criminal History check. This position is considered essential personnel and subject to working during University closings.
