Licensed Veterinary Technician or Veterinarian

Position Summary:
The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation at Virginia Tech is seeking a Licensed Veterinary Technician or Veterinarian. The office oversees the university-wide strategic initiatives and operational functions of Virginia Tech's $520+ million research enterprise and in achieving the ambitious plans of Virginia Tech is making to be a leading 21st century land grant university that delivers innovative solutions to the most pressing global challenges of our time.
The Office of the University Veterinarian ( OUV ) is a reporting unit to the VP for Research and Innovation, and is seeking a self-motivated, personable team member to help provide veterinary care to the variety of animals used in research and teaching at Virginia Tech. Every day is different at the OUV . Our successful candidate must be able to keep a positive attitude, prioritize daily activities, and be willing to travel occasionally. In addition, the successful candidate will perform the following tasks:
- Assists in monitoring and assuring the health and well-being of all research and teaching animals
- Is responsible for maintaining the inventory of critical veterinary consumables
- Assists with implementing the preventive health care programs.
- Provides veterinary technical expertise and scientific technical support services in accordance with SOP's on a cost-recovery (fee-for-service) basis for research projects.
- Assists in providing technical training to investigators, graduate students, research and animal care technicians to facilitate research and teaching activities.
- Assists with preparation of AAALAC accreditation documents and site visits, USDA reporting and other regulatory requirements of the Office of the University Veterinarian.
- Assists in organizing, maintaining and updating SOP's and information on the website.
- Attends meetings with investigators and animal care staff as requested by the OUV and organizes and distributes minutes of these meetings.
- Assists with veterinary pre-review of IACUC protocols, depending on credentials (responsibility if hired at the veterinarian level)
- Attends monthly rounds at agricultural facilities, completes rounds reports, and communicates with farm managers to ensure deficiencies are corrected in a timely manner.
- Participates in the weekend and holiday on-call schedule, with appropriate veterinary back-up, as needed. (responsibility if hired at the veterinarian level)
Depending on the knowledge, skills and abilities of the successful candidate, this position may be offered as either a licensed veterinary technician (non-exempt) or veterinarian (exempt).

Required Qualifications:
Minimal qualifications include an Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology, Virginia licensure or eligible to be a Licensed Veterinary Technician ( LVT ), or laboratory animal technicians with AALAS credentials of Laboratory Animal Technician ( LAT ) or Technologist ( LATG ).
Veterinarians ( DVM or equivalent) will also be considered for this position. Ideal candidates are team players with critical thinking skills that are also enthusiastic about learning and applying new skills. This position will require the ability to work independently and professionally with faculty, staff and students as well as with all types of species: including rodents, dogs, agricultural animals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Persons must have the ability to identify and complete tasks without being asked. Physical demands of the position include, but are not limited to: stressful situations, prolonged periods of standing on uneven ground and foundation, lifting and restraining animals that may exceed 75 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge and technical skills related to a diverse number of animal species, including traditional laboratory animals, farm animals, and birds. Experience in anesthesia, rodent biomethodology, large animal sampling, and medical record review. Computer skills in Word, Excel, and Outlook. Possesses basic computer skills for word processing, spreadsheet and email.
