Assistant Director of Event Planning

The Assistant Director for Event Planning in Student Engagement and Campus Life provides oversight and leadership of the scheduling office that supports use of spaces across departmental venues and campus common space. The Assistant Director reports to the Associate Director for Union Services and works collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community partners to assist with client needs and making their events safe and successful on-campus. This position serves as an administrator over the event management database system and provides leadership to a dynamic group of professional and student staff. Essential skills for the position include excellent collaborative and communication skills, detail orientation, and adaptability.
Additionally, the Assistant Director will adopt and practice the Principles of Community as fundamental to Virginia Tech's on-going efforts to increase access and inclusion and to create a dynamic community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality & Tourism Management, Public Relations, Marketing, Business or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and the ability to work with a diverse group of constituents
• Previous event planning experience in a university setting, hotel or conference center, convention or visitors bureau, banquet facility or similar environment;
• Supervision & training experience;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with managing budgets, writing reports, and assessment;
• Demonstrated ability to interpret policy and to prioritize services and events;
• Ability to effectively manage multiple projects in a high-volume, fast-paced environment;
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications;
• Strong customer service skills, with a demonstrated commitment to quality, creative problem solving and attention to detail;
• Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of clients, event sponsors and university administrators, in groups and one-on-one settings;
• Able to work under pressure, use independent judgment and prioritize and delegate assignments as appropriate;
• Desire to work in a team environment with a dedication to innovation, continuous process improvement and learning;
• Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings, weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Preference given to a candidate with a Master's in Higher Education and/or Student Affairs
• Experience or proficiency in event management software such as EMS , R25, EBMS , Scheduler Plus, etc.;
• Higher education and/or student affairs (especially college unions) employment experience or background;
• Previous experience designing and developing events;
• Experience related to program development, scheduling/coordination, consulting;
• Marketing or public relations experience or education.
