Specialist I/II/III, Vet Tech

**This is a pool posting for future vacancies in this job classification. Applications will be considered active for a period of six months from the posting date. The College of Veterinary Medicine operates 24/7 to provide animal client care. The hours required for any particular assignment will be determined at the time of the specific vacancy. Work schedules often involve holidays or require overtime.**

The Specialist, Vet Tech performs various routine and specialized animal care duties and medical tests. The following essential functions are representative of major duties of positions in this job classification. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. Other duties may be assigned consistent with the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job. Not all of the duties may be assigned to a position.

Performs, instructs, and demonstrates specialized veterinary care techniques and procedures.

Assists veterinarians in the care of patients requiring specialized care.

Organizes and prepares treatment areas for veterinary procedures.

Administers injections, anesthesia, vaccines, and various other treatments to animals.

Performs laboratory tests to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems.

Provides specialized care and monitoring of animals before, during, and/or after procedures.

Performs emergency first aid such as emergency resuscitation or other life-saving procedures.

May be responsible for training, assisting or assigning tasks to others. May provide input to performance reviews of other employees.

Minimum Qualifications
Entry into applicant pool requires an Associate's degree from an accredited institution in Veterinary Technology or a related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification and three (3) years of experience in the performance of advanced/specialized veterinary technician duties or in veterinary technology. Entry into Level I requires an employee to have an active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician or to have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) and have met all requirements to become certified as a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS). Entry into Level II and III requires an employee to have obtained certification as a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS). Must have detailed knowledge of established veterinary processes, methods, and techniques, as well as the ability to obtain needed information to select and adapt methods and procedures. Desired Qualifications
Skill in using specialized techniques and equipment to resolve operational problems not fully covered by precedents, and knowledge of specific scientific principles and skill in using complex techniques in area of specialization is desired.
