Professional Academic Advisor

Position Summary:
The College of Science Dean's Office -Virginia Tech is seeking a full-time professional academic advisor to assist undergraduate students in achieving their academic and professional goals. The successful candidate will have outstanding communication skills, strong attention to detail, the ability to handle multiple projects in a time sensitive manner, flexibility, and a commitment to student customer service in a team environment. This position is responsible for providing academic advising services, maintaining student files and records, and delivering accurate information and advice to students about majors, minors, course options, study abroad, and transfer credits. As a professional advisor, the position will monitor the academic progress of students and initiate academic intervention for students in academic difficulty, facilitate advising events, programs and workshops, assist with advising assessment, and develop training materials and presentations. In addition, this position serves as a liaison to other offices at Virginia Tech and will assist with new student orientation, commencement, and other duties as assigned. Occasional evening/weekend work is required.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent training and/or experience.
- Experience with student-based activities in a higher educational setting such as advising, admissions review, and orientation.
- Demonstrated knowledge of computer skills and software such as Microsoft Office.
- Experience in event planning and facilitating workshops.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
- General knowledge of methods and problems of organizational and program management, research and interview techniques, and the principles of individual and group behavior.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Professional demeanor and both a service-oriented and team attitude is a must.
- Must be able to safely move and handle items weighing up to 20 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree.
- Experience in advising one or more of the following groups of students: Veterans; First-generation college students; Transfer students; Underrepresented students; Students with disabilities.
- Experience using advising technologies for student intervention and appointment scheduling (e.g., Student Success Collaborative).
- Experience using student information systems such as BANNER .
- Member of NACADA or like professional organization.
