Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Associate Vice President for University Development ( AVP ) directs all central and the university's 17 colleges, schools, and units fundraising programs including major gifts, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving, planned gifts, and regional programs. The AVP plays a pivotal role in planning and executing university-wide fundraising campaigns, and works in partnership with the Vice President for University Relations and in close collaboration with the deans and directors in managing Maryland's advancement efforts. S/he will establish annual and campaign goals, hold development staff accountable, work with development officers and campus partners to create and execute donor strategies, provide training and mentorship to fundraising staff, as well as maintain a portfolio of high-level prospects. The AVP reports directly to the Vice President of University Relations and serves on the senior leadership team.

The AVP will travel locally, nationally and internationally 25% of the time and have the availability to work evenings and weekends as necessary for events, donor meetings and programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor's Degree required.

Experience:
A minimum of 10 years of successful and progressively responsible leadership in all aspects of a mature development program with at least two (2) years developing, managing and interpreting analytics in a fundraising environment. Must have a successful fundraising track-record and strength in developing thoughtful donor strategies in a vast and complex organization. Must have experience managing a budget, leading and growing professional-level staff and building and managing relationships with key internal and external stake holders.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge and understanding of the fundraising process. Familiarity with reporting tools and accountability measures. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to successfully engage and motivate diverse groups of individuals at all levels, including staff, alumni and volunteers. Experience in short and long term strategic planning and a desire to take UMD's advancement program to a new level of success. Ability to build trusting and meaningful relationships with colleagues, deans, directors, volunteers and donors.

Preferences:

Masters degree preferred.
