Chief Advancement Officer, Division of Student Affairs

Position Summary:
The Chief Advancement Officer ( CAO ) for the Division of Student Affairs ( DSA ) will be the senior leader within DSA charged with informing, engaging, partnering with, and securing financial support from a diverse spectrum of parents and families, alumni, and friends of Virginia Tech. As the chief fundraiser, the CAO will lead development, alumni affairs, and engagement activities for parents and families, as well as student leader alumni while working seamlessly with the DSA chief communications officer to develop a DSA Advancement structure. The CAO will formulate and implement a strategic advancement plan, including appropriate staffing levels, to complement the strategic plans of the Division of Student Affairs and the University.
Reports jointly to the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Assistant Vice President for Leadership Gifts and Annual Giving.
Travel, on average, five to eight days per month to cultivate, solicit, steward, and identify prospects.
Have a portfolio of approximately 100 prospects
Have a typical solicitation range of $250,000 to $1,000,000
Close $2,000,000 per year using a three year rolling average
Close on average 10 - 13 gifts per fiscal year

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree with significant and progressively responsible fundraising and leadership experience or Master's degree.
Demonstrated successful track record in leadership gifts fundraising at the $5,000-$100,000 level (and higher), and alumni relations, or event program management.
Demonstrated fundraising management experience.
Demonstrated capability of motivating and deploying volunteers, professional staff and donors.
Must have demonstrated supervisory, analytical, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
Must have demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity and inclusion.
Must have strong computer skills, which should include desktop software and databases.
Strong motivation and proven ability to work well as both a leader and contributing team member within a complex organization requiring collaboration, teamwork, and communications.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference given to candidates who demonstrate relevant change management experience and experience building new programs.
Preference given to candidates with experience managing parent and family engagement as well as alumni fundraising programs in a University setting.
Experience working with high level individuals to advance relationships which will lead to their investment in priority areas.
Preference for proven success in building productive relationships with senior administrators, key business leaders, faculty, staff, institutional boards, volunteers, and/or donors.
