Instructor/Assistant Professor In-Residence


The School of Business Operations and Information Management Department (OPIM) at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a non-tenure track position at the rank of Instructor In-Residence or Assistant Professor In-Residence for teaching, service, outreach and research in the areas of Management and Engineering for Manufacturing (MEM) and Operations Management (OM) to begin in fall 2018. It is anticipated that the main teaching responsibilities will be at the University's main campus in Storrs. We encourage applications from candidates whose expertise and interest are in technical and quantitative areas of operational decision-making, project management, business analytics, supply-chain management, and/or manufacturing.

The successful candidate will be expected to share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate level, to the development of innovative courses, and to the mentoring of students in their professional development. In addition, individuals will be expected to contribute to scholarship and outreach targeted at the professional community so as to maintain faculty qualifications under AACSB guidelines. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their teaching and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods; contribute to the development of pedagogical techniques to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor In-Residence must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent in an appropriate field. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.
  • Candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor In-Residence must have demonstrated excellence or strong potential in teaching relevant courses.
  • Qualified applicants at the rank of Instructor In-Residence must possess a Master's degree in an appropriate field and demonstrated teaching excellence/capabilities in relevant courses.
  • A deep commitment to promoting diversity through their academic and research programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Ph.D. in a related field.
  • Sufficient academic experience and demonstrated leadership skills making one suitable to co-direct the Management and Engineering for Manufacturing (MEM) program, an undergraduate degree program partnership with the School of Engineering. Though not a requirement for hire, a candidate able to step into this additional appointment immediately would be favored. This additional appointment would be accompanied by additional compensation: an additional one-month pay (one-ninth of base salary) or a reduction in the teaching load.
  • Experience developing or participating in academic and industry partnerships. As a member of the MEM faculty, a subgroup within OPIM, this position will participate in the MEM program's Senior Design program, in which students work in the intersection of Business and Engineering to solve an operational need of a local sponsor company. The ability to serve as a bridge between industry and academic perspectives and expectations is therefore highly valued.
  • Experience in both Business and Engineering education.
  • Industrial experience related to manufacturing, supply-chain management, operations management, operations research, industrial engineering, project management or quality management (including Six Sigma or continuous improvement).

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, nine-month, end-date non-tenure track position with the possibility of annual reappointment, contingent upon positive annual reviews and program funding, and may lead to a multi-year appointment. The anticipated start date is August 23, 2018. The successful candidate's primary academic appointment will be at the University's Storrs (primary undergraduate) campus with the possibility of assignment at other regional campuses. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
