Software Engineer, Autonomous Vehicles-VTTI

Position Summary:
The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute ( VTTI ) seeks talented engineers, who enjoy solving complex problems. Ideal candidate is a highly motivated engineer, expected to work independently and in a group environment. Position will Develop software for a variety of autonomous vehicle control and data acquisition projects. These designs will be used to improve controls, localization, path planning, perception, data quality, and other cutting edge technologies used in our current and future generation automated vehicles.
As a team member at VTTI you'll help facilitate exciting research into human and vehicle factors by solving challenging engineering problems. VTTI is a world leading safety research center working with many OEMs, Tier Ones, and Government agencies to bring about the safe development and deployment of automated cars on American roadways. VTTI is saving lives through research.
Duties and responsibilities:
-Work with a group of experienced engineers within the Center for Technology Development.
-Design software for autonomous vehicle research.
-Assist in the design and deployment of automated vehicles and data acquisition systems.
-Test designs on the Virginia Smart Road, Surface Street Expansion, and Rural Roadway private test tracks.
-Perform work that involves developing innovative and creative solutions to complex engineering challenges with the goal of advancing the field of data collection and transportation safety.
Directions given and received:
Independently performs most assignments with instructions on global objectives and general results expected. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment. May supervise/mentor/train and coordinate the work of technicians, junior engineers, and others who assist in specific assignments.

Required Qualifications:
-M.S. degree in Computer Engineering or comparable with exception for a lesser degree with significant related experience.
-Extensive experience writing software in C++ and Python
-Experience with Linux
-Experience interfacing various components and sensors
-Experience implementing robotic control algorithms
-Must have a strong work ethic and be able to work independently with little supervision.
-Experience with ROS

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience with automated systems highly desired
-Experience with localization desired
-Experience with machine learning desired
-Experience with sensor fusion desired
