Position Summary:
The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation is seeking a highly motivated, resourceful, and trustworthy individual to join our senior leadership team as the Attending Veterinarian and Director of Laboratory Animal Resources. The office oversees the university-wide strategic initiatives and operational functions of Virginia Tech's research enterprise and associated technology commercialization activities, which span eight academic colleges, eight university research institutes, and three affiliated research corporations. The university is embarking on its next phase of strategic growth in research across its Blacksburg, Roanoke, and Northern Virginia locations, including the integration of a medical school in 2018.
The position is critical to ensuring excellent animal care and welfare in all aspects of the university's programs. Virginia Tech has one of the most comprehensive programs in the nation, encompassing a wide variety of vertebrate species used in biomedical, agricultural, veterinary, wildlife and fish research and instruction at the Blacksburg and Roanoke campuses as well as seven Agriculture Research and Extension locations across Virginia. The laboratory and agricultural animal space encompasses multiple sites comprising the College of Veterinary Medicine including: the Marion DuPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, VA - ~58,000 sf and 150 acres; Laboratory Animal Resources - ~ 38,500 sf; decentralized/non-farm facilities - ~26,400 sf; and farm production units - ~170,000 sf and 1,600 acres. The Agricultural Research Extension Units, which include two beef, swine, sheep, horse, and fish facilities, have ~1,900 acres with associated farm buildings. This position reports directly to the Vice President for Research and Innovation and is a member of the senior leadership team.
Opportunities:
- With strong support from university leadership, align the Office of the University Veterinarian, including Laboratory Animal Resources, for strategic growth of research programs.
- Lead the effort to achieve and maintain university-wide AAALAC accreditation, collaborating with stakeholders within the university to meet and apply accreditation standards.
- Participate in stakeholder groups related to the expansion of Health Science and Technology research at the Blacksburg and Roanoke campuses.
- Potential for an appointment in an academic unit.

Core Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership to the University's animal programs and oversight of three centralized animal facilities and 26 decentralized animal facilities across all Virginia Tech locations.
- Provide supervision of operations and personnel, and execution of duties associated with the Office of the University Veterinarian and Laboratory Animal Resources.
- Collaborate with a wide variety of university stakeholders, assure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, and maintain excellent standards of veterinary care for a wide variety of animals used in research and instruction at the university.
- Serve as an ex officio voting member of Virginia Tech's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee ( IACUC ) and Institutional Biosafety Committee ( IBC ), and on other committees, task forces and working groups that affect animal programs at the institution.
- Recommend procurement of equipment and facility renovation or expansion consistent with current standards that assure animal well-being and the safety of those who work with animals.
- Provide consultation and assistance to ensure animal care and use protocols to meet or exceed established standards, and offer suggestions on improved techniques that may enhance animal well-being and/or research program effectiveness.
- Share on-call veterinary care responsibility during evenings, weekends, and holidays with the veterinary staff within the Office of the University Veterinarian.

Required Qualifications:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent, Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine ( ACLAM ), and a license to practice in at least one state.
- Progressively advanced experience in a diverse AAALAC accredited laboratory animal research program, including biomedical and agricultural research.
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective program leadership, including workforce management and budget oversight.
- Skilled supervisor and coach, able to motivate or inspire both junior and senior staff.
- Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, diplomacy and the ability to effectively interact and build trusted relationships.
- Proven ability to effectively organize, prioritize and perform multiple job functions and conflicting priorities, meet deadlines, and manage changing situations.
- Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills to manage complex tasks and/or those that require balancing competing interests.
- Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality with discretion.
- Result driven, accepts and acts on all forms of feedback to effect change.
- Demonstrate patience, reliability, composure and stability under pressure.
- Adaptable and open to change as the office and university evolves.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Significant experience developing, leading and managing a diverse AAALAC accredited program encompassing agricultural, laboratory, biomedical, companion, fish, and wildlife species.
- Experience working as a veterinarian in a university with a medical school, a veterinary school, a college of agriculture, and one or more other colleges, institutes or departments actively conducting research using animals.
- Demonstrated success working with and providing leadership for a diverse and geographically dispersed team.
