Associate Dean of the Graduate School

Position Summary:
The Graduate School invites nominations and applications from Virginia Tech faculty for the position of Associate Dean of the Graduate School. This is a senior-level position reporting directly to the Vice President and Dean for Graduate Education. This position is a 50% calendar-year renewable appointment to be held concurrently with a Virginia Tech tenured associate professor or professor appointment. The expected starting date is no later than August 1, 2018.
The associate dean is expected to work closely with the Vice President and Dean for Graduate Education and other associate deans and staff of the Graduate School as well as with Virginia Tech faculty and administrators to ensure excellence in graduate education, support graduate programs, support graduate school initiatives, provide support for policy and governance, and promote diversity and inclusion.
Responsibilities include:
-Teach transformative graduate education courses.
-Consult with faculty and graduate students on policies and procedures.
-Provide development and leadership for the Graduate Teaching Assistant Workshops.
-Serve as a liaison to the Council of Associate Deans for Research and Council of Associate Deans for Graduate Studies.

Required Qualifications:
-Tenured associate professor or professor.
-Demonstrated record of scholarship and active engagement in graduate education.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience in the administration or support of a graduate program - e.g., serving as graduate program director, serving on the Commission on Graduate Studies and Policies (Graduate Curriculum Committee, DRSCAP , or Graduate Honors), or serving on a departmental graduate program committee.
-Experience teaching graduate-level courses, chairing and serving on graduate advisory committees, and mentoring graduate assistants.
-Familiarity with the university governance system.
-Understanding and appreciation of interdisciplinary education.
-Familiarity with the Graduate Catalog.
